Matthews has had one of the best goal-scoring seasons in recent history and it is a shame that his campaign will be reduced to 56 games instead of 82. The rate at which he is scoring was 66 goals on pace for the season, which would have been the highest in the 21st century.
In the history of the game, there are only 39 instances of a player scoring 60 or more goals, so Matthews would have been in rare company if he had been able to play a regularly scheduled season.
While it’s funny to compare Matthews to some of the greatest seasons of all time, it’s not fair because this season is 26 games shorter than a typical campaign. We can obviously admire Matthews for what he’s doing, but we shouldn’t compare it, because in those 26 games he’s not playing, a lot can happen.
Estimates do not tell the actual picture and the 56-game campaign does not reflect the actual 82-game season. For example, the Toronto Maple Leafs were technically a playoff team during the 2012–13 season with a 26–17–5 record, but for all we know, it did not end with a 44–29–9, because of that projection. I would have suggested.
Son
From his puck-juggling to his powerful backhand shots, two-year-old Sergei Ovechkin is clearly an advanced hockey player for his age. Sergei’s skills are so impressive that his father, NHL legend Alex Ovechkin, is convinced that his son will someday make a living playing sports.
Speaking with Russian Television International earlier this month, Ovechkin spoke about his son’s talent in the sport and how his parents supported and inspired him enough to reach the NHL.
How many goals does have
Will Alex Ovechkin be able to catch Wayne Gretzky? Tracking NHL goals as the Capitals star continues to climb the list of all-time
will he do it or not? That’s all anyone wants to know.
Trying to figure out whether Alex Ovechkin will pass Wayne Gretzky for the NHL’s all-time goals record involves downplaying several moving goals and providing answers to mostly unanswered questions. And while the easy answer is simply “it’s too early to tell,” it’s also no fun.
Ovechkin entered the season 164 goals behind Gretzky. With the legend of the capitals off to a bang, here’s a closer look at what it would really take to jeopardize Gretzky’s place in history.
