Guilty By Default
26 people, including 20 school children, were killed in a shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
For years Jones claimed that the shooting was a “false flag” operation engineered by the government to bring in stricter gun control laws.
Jones claimed on his radio show and website that the incident was “completely fake with actors,” “synthetic” and “huge hoaxes” by opponents of the Second Amendment and mainstream media.
The families of Sandy Hook victims were subjected to years of harassment in person and online over the claims.
He successfully argued that Jones made money by spreading fake conspiracy theories through his Infowars channel.
On Monday, Connecticut Superior Court Judge Barbara Bayliss issued a default judgment, saying Jones’ attorneys had shown “a blatant disregard of their obligation” to turn over financial and web analytics data, the Hartford Courant reported.
Attorney Chris Mattei, representing the families of the victims, told the Hartford Courant: “Mr. Jones is very used to saying whatever he wants to say from the comfort of his own studio, but I think this case has made a difference to him.” What it has shown is that when he is forced to defend his conduct in court and obey court orders, that is a very different ballgame.
Defamation Suit
All defendants have failed to fully and fairly comply with their search obligations,” Bellis said in the virtual hearing.
Judge Bayliss said he had scheduled Monday’s sanctions hearing by Jones’ defendants “in the hope of fixing these problems.”
“While the families are grateful for the court’s decision, they are focused on uncovering the truth. As noted by the court, Alex Jones and his companies deliberately concealed evidence of the relationship between them and how they make money. ,” said Chris Mattei of Koskoff, Koskoff.
Ruling
Lawyers for the plaintiffs said a Connecticut judge on Monday ruled in favor of the families of victims of the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School after failing to provide documents in the defamation suit against Alex Jones, Plaintiff’s lawyers said.
Jones, the founder of the right-wing website Infowars, claimed that the shooting, in which 20 children and six school workers were shot dead at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, was fabricated by gun-control advocates and the mainstream media. read more
In response, several parents sued Jones and InfoWars, as well as its parent company, for defamation in both Austin, Texas and Waterbury, Connecticut. Infowars is based in Texas.
Connecticut Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis ruled that Jones had lapsed in the case by refusing to turn over the documents he had ordered to prevent his companies from publishing the false claim. There has been profit, attorney Chris Mattei said in a statement.
“Mr Jones was given every opportunity to comply, but when he chose instead to withdraw the evidence for more than two years, the Court was left with no choice but to rule as it is today,” Mattei said. Said, whose firm, Koskoff, Koskoff.
