Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list and has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, meaning backup Mason Rudolph is in line to start.
Rudolph has not started a game since week 17 of the 2020 season. However, he could be a solid addition to fantasy managers in need of a quarterback entering Sunday’s slate of games.
The 26-year-old has featured in 15 career matches and leads 5-4 in nine starts. Rudolph has completed 61.7 percent of his career passes for 2,089 yards and 15 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.
The Lions, who are 0-8 in the season, are allowing 244.4 passing yards per game. Detroit’s run defense is even worse because they are allowing 134.5 yards on the ground, the fourth-worst mark in the league, according to the Pro Football Reference.
Rudolph is roasted in zero percent of the Yahoo Sports fantasy league, so he should be available to pick. However, fantasy managers should not see Rudolph in the QB as a long-term solution.
Roethlisberger said earlier this month that he had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccinated NFL players are eligible to return after two negative COVID-19 tests in the span of 24 hours, meaning Roethlisberger could return next weekend as soon as possible.
As far as wide receiver Dionte Johnson is concerned, his role in the Steelers’ offense should not change just because Roethlisberger has been sidelined. The 25-year-old leads Pittsburgh this season with 45 catches for 530 yards and three touchdowns on 69 goals.
If anything, Johnson should be targeted against Detroit this weekend as much, if not more. Chase Claypool, with a toe injury, is second on the Steelers with 52 goals and 433 yards. He is third in the team with 29 catches but has only one touchdown.

To put it please, the Steelers’ backup quarterback position is undefined. Right now, Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins and Josh Dobbs are in the depth chart behind Ben Roethlisberger. There’s absolutely no Murderers Row for the team, should anything happen to the 39-year-old Roethlisberger. Right now, Rudolph could be the clubhouse leader for the primary backup role. Against the Cowboys in a Hall of Fame game, he seemed more decisive than Haskins, who seemed to be a step slower than everything else. Rudolph completed six of nine passes for 84 yards, while Haskins completed eight of 13 passes for 54 yards.
In the Steelers’ second preseason game against the Eagles, Rudolph helped Steelers backup QB Mason Rudolph’s case with this fine 33-yard pass, with a great deep throw to receiver Dionte Johnson in the team’s preseason game against the Eagles. Impressed. 4:39 Saved in the first quarter.

When Mason Rudolph ran into Earl Thomas in the third quarter of the Steelers Week 5 matchup, the entire team gasped. The offensive line gathered around his quarterback, JuJu Smith-Shuster nearly collapsed in shock, while the rest of the team paused, waiting for his partner’s life to reappear.
It was a moment that touched the Steelers’ home. About two years ago, some of these players saw Ryan Shazier lay on the ground and never return to the field. Unable to move his legs, Shazier was led off the field, wiping tears from his eyes.
James Washington and Mason Rudolph were not part of the 2017 team that lost Shazier. Both were playing in their senior seasons at Oklahoma State, but experienced almost the same heart-stopping moment a year earlier.
