At the corporate level, the National Football League considers itself a trade association made up of and financed by its 32 member teams. Up until 2015, the league was an unincorporated nonprofit 501(c)(6) association. Section 501(c)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code provides an exemption from federal income taxation for “Business leagues, chambers of commerce, real-estate boards, boards of trade, or professional football leagues (whether or not administering a pension fund for football players), not organized for profit and no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.”

Trade Rumors
The saga surrounding Deshaun Watson’s potential trade has been dragging on since January this year. In the last 10 days, we have seen plenty of rumors emerge, but as of yet, no move has been completed.
And odds are one will not come at all ahead of Tuesday. ESPN reported Sunday that the Texans are prepared to hang onto Watson past the deadline if no team meets their asking price. While owner Cal McNair has indicated that he wants to move on from Watson by Tuesday, he is deferring to GM Nick Caserio, who is reportedly unwilling budge on compensation.
The Dolphins have long been and continue to be the favorites to land Watson — mostly because that’s where he wants to play and he has been unwilling to waive his no-trade clause for anyone else — but Watson’s uncertain legal status has complicated matters. Our sense, based on discussions with league sources familiar with the organization’s thinking, is that a deal is not imminent. That’s not to say one couldn’t come together in the next two days, but short of Watson settling with all 22 accusers, it’s hard to see how.
Trade deadline
NFL teams cannot trade after the trade deadline. Teams won’t be able to complete trades until the new league year begins in March 2022. The NFL hasn’t officially announced when the new league year begins, though it usually comes on eve of free agency.
Teams can, however, agree to deals in principle before the league year opens. That happens on occasion during the offseason, as we saw with the Rams’ trade for Matthew Stafford in 2021 and Washington’s trade for Alex Smith in 2018.
Week 8 predictions
Aaron Rodgers has made several memorable Thursday Night Football appearances ever since he subbed in for Brett Favre against the Dallas Cowboys in 2007. There was the Miracle in Motown in 2015 and great performances against the Bears and Vikings.
This week offers something new. The Packers are underdogs on the road against unbeaten Arizona, led by star quarterback Kyler Murray. Those quarterbacks have arguably the two best receivers in the game in Davante Adams and DeAndre Hopkins, though Adams (COVID-19 list) might miss the game. It’s a great matchup that probably should be on Sunday Night Football instead, but on a short week we’ll take it.
That kicks off a fantastic week in which SN likes the NFC North underdogs. The Packers, Bears and Vikings should all pull upsets, and we even like the Lions to get their first victory.
