Morton was in the middle of his third career World Series debut and his fourth overall. He previously pitched in the Fall Classic with the 2017 Houston Astros (who won the title) and the 2020 Tampa Bay Rays (who didn’t). On the night after escaping a base-loaded position in the first innings, Morton surrendered without a run on the hit, completing 2 innings and taking two walks. He also dismissed three batsmen.

“Fractures hurt,” Dr. Rodney Benner, an orthopedic surgeon in Indianapolis, told CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder. “The unstable ones that require surgery range from rotational injuries that not only break bone but disrupt ligament structures. These types of direct concussion injuries can break the bone and make the ankle too much to play. May injure, but do not injure ligaments.”

The Braves have a limited amount of options for their Game 5 debut. Kyle Wright and Drew Smiley are both on the World Series roster, yet one of two figures starting Game 4. Husqar Yonoa is ineligible after being dropped from Atlanta’s National League Championship Series team with an injury of his own. Brave is all but certain to add a pitcher in Morton’s place before Game 2.

During the regular season, Morton started 33 times and compiled a 3.34 ERA (132 ERA) and a 3.72 strike-to-walk ratio. The Braves signed Morton in early September for an extension that would pay him $20 million next year. That deal includes a club option for the 2023 season.

The Braves are on the verge of representing the National League in this year’s World Series, words that cause real, physical pain to write. He is led by a powerful offense that has added business deadline takeovers that have made him even more powerful this year. He has struggled in the rotation at times, but has started off well with the likes of Max Fried and Charlie Morton.

Morton has been amazing in the playoffs since he was first introduced to the Houston environment. Signed to Low Risk Guarantee in 2017, he has since transformed himself into a high velocity monster that is one of the better, more underrated pitchers in the game today. It’s almost as if the Phillies could use someone like him in their rotation.

Ah, that’s right – they already had.

When they acquired him from Pittsburgh, Morton was the one the team saw something of and decided to take a chance, hoping they might get lucky and grab a solid mid-rotation hand that offered little more. . Alas, it’s Philadelphia and we all know what happens to the best plans.

Morton had played two scoreless innings and dismissed the leadoff batsman in the third, when he departed, ending the night with one hit, two walks and three strikes on 44 pitches. He threw 16 pitches and faced three batsmen after breaking a bone, with relief pitcher A.J. Minter.

The Braves took a 5–0 lead in the first three innings and held Houston on par all night. The bullpen conceded two runs on 6.2 frames with eight strikeouts, and the offense expanded to 12 hits. George Soler led the game with a single home run, becoming the first player in World Series history for a homer to top the first. NLCS MVP Eddie Rosario went 2-for-5 with the double, and also got an outfield assist in the eighth inning to catch Yuli Gurriel trying to stretch the single to the double.

Morton has a 3.24 ERA from 16.2 innings this season, with 22 strikes and 10 walks.

How did get hurt

On the surface, Charlie Morton’s stats from Game 1 of the World Series might not look very impressive. The Braves starter didn’t allow a run in Atlanta’s 6–2 win over the Astros, but he threw just 44 pitches in 2 1/3 innings during the competition.

However, the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Morton suffered an injury in the second inning of that game when Yuli Gurrill hit the ball at 102 mph with his lower right foot.

Despite this Morton remained in the game to face the next three Astros. He threw 16 pitches before being out of the game. The Braves later confirmed that Morton was dealing with a ruptured fibula, although it is not clear whether he suffered the break when playing against Gurrell or while delivering another pitch afterward.
