The EFL Cup (historically, and colloquially, referred to as the League Cup), currently known as the Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons, is an annual knockout football competition in men’s domestic English football. Organized by the English Football League (EFL), it is open to any club within the top four tiers of the English football league system – a total of 92 clubs – which includes the top-level Premier League, and the English Football League’s own three divisions. England
First organized as the Football League Cup in 1960–61, it is, along with the Premier League and the FA Cup, one of the three top-tier domestic football competitions in England. It ends in February, much earlier than the other two, which end in May. It was introduced by the league as a reaction to the growing popularity of European football, and also to exercise power over the FA. It also took advantage of the roll-out of floodlights, allowing fixtures to be played as midweek evening games. The tournament was rebranded as the EFL Cup from the 2016–17 season, with the Football League being renamed as the English Football League in 2016. [citation needed]
The tournament is played in seven rounds, with the exception of the semi-finals, with full single leg ties. The final is held at Wembley Stadium at a neutral venue and is the only tie in the competition to be played on the weekend (Sunday). The first two rounds are divided into north and south sections, and a system of byes based on league level ensures that higher-ranked teams enter the later rounds, and deferred the entry of teams still involved in Europe. The winners receive the EFL Cup,[1] of which there are three designs, the current one also being original. The winners also qualify for European football.

All 92 clubs in the Premier League and the English Football League will enter the season’s EFL Cup. Access is distributed among the top 4 leagues of the English football league system. For the first two rounds, the draw is regionalized into northern and southern clubs.
