Patrick Line (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈlɑine]; born 19 April 1998 in Tampere, Finland) is a Finnish professional ice hockey winger who currently plays for the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League (NHL). Line previously played in the SM-Liga with Tappara Tampere in his native Finland before being taken by the Jets with the second overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Line began playing hockey at the age of four and initially played at every venue. His primary position was goalkeeper which was his preferred position and his best at the time. Laine made his Liga debut with Tappara during the 2014–15 season at the age of 16, registering six games and scoring one point. However, he spent most of that season on loan with Mestis’s Leckie.
He started the 2015–16 season with Tappara, scoring 17 goals and 16 assists for a total of 33 points in a span of 46 games with the club.
You can usually count on two things when it comes to Patrick Line: He’ll score a ton of goals, and he’ll disappoint you with his inconsistency.
Laine had scored at least 28 goals in his first four NHL seasons, being highlighted by 44 in 2017-18. Last year was the only season he didn’t deliver – he only played 45 games. But with 12 goals, he was on pace for his lowest offensive total in the entire season. With the Columbus Blue Jackets struggling to find their footing in their first season after an early-season trade from Winnipeg, it was a down year to say the least.

Although Laine’s season in 2019–20 was stronger than before, rumors spread during the off-season that the Jets were interested in trading him to a team, including Laine’s own agent; In an interview in January 2021, Line dismissed any concerns about these rumours. Salary
Line, 23, is considering signing a qualifying offer from the Blue Jackets for $7.5 million. This would make him the team’s highest-paid player next season and would mark a $750,000 increase from his $6.75 million salary cap value in the previous season.
Dispatches have learned that the Finnish star forward may sign a deal that will give him a one-year contract and convince him to sign a longer extension to give the team’s management more time. Blue Jackets general manager Jermo Kecklen did not respond to a request for comment. Andy Scott, one of Line’s representatives, declined to comment.
The line struggled last season after the Winnipeg Jets traded him and Jack Roslovic forward to Pierre-Luc Dubois on January 23 and the Blue Jackets for his 2022 third-round pick. He posted career lows in nearly every offensive category – finishing with just 12 goals, 12 assists and 24 points in 46 games – but has significant rebound potential.
In 2016, the Jets picked him for second place overall, one ahead of Dubois, with Line scoring 140 goals, 110 assists and 250 points in a four-plus season at Winnipeg (306 games). He scored a career-high 44 goals in his second NHL season and 30 goals in each of his first three campaigns.
