Joel Hans Embiid (joh-EL em-BEED born March 16, 1994) is a Cameroonian professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After a year of college basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks, he was drafted by the 76ers in the 2014 NBA Draft with the third overall pick. Multiple leg and knee injuries delayed his debut for two seasons until the 2016–17, when he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team despite playing only 31 games. Embiid has received four All-Star selections. He has nicknamed himself “The Process” in response to 76ers fans’ refrain from “relying on the process” during the Sam Hinkey era.

Similar to his mentor, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant did not appreciate being modest. He often used any extra inspiration he could find to help him dominate for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Joel Embiid was in tears as he left the court after Kawhi Leonard’s series-winning shot to help the Toronto Raptors eliminate the Philadelphia 76ers.

Embiid countered a shot from Leonard, a fade-away jumper to the right who saw the ball bounce over the rim four times before going down.

As the Raptors flocked to Leonard to celebrate, the Sixers walked off the court. When Raptors center Marc Gasol stopped Embiid to talk to him, the camera caught Embiid walking completely off the court. There, Embiid wept bitterly, so loudly that he laid his head on Gasol’s shoulder.

Injury

Embiid didn’t bother the knee much against Atlanta as he averaged 30.4 points and 12.7 rebounds in 37.4 minutes per performance in the series. However, there was some speculation about whether Embiid would undergo surgery after the season. Such a surgery was never done as Embiid opted for a natural healing procedure. We heard nothing more than Embiid in the off-season, but at Philadelphia’s Media Day on Monday, the big man provided a promising update on his knee.

“It’s okay,” Embiid said of his knee. “I’ve been working out all summer now. It’s okay, no problem. I’m going back to where I was and I feel great.”
