The biggest game of James Cook’s UGA football career came in a nationally televised, prime-time game against No. 2 Alabama, which showed good things happening when the junior running back lays his hand on the ball in an open field. There are.

“I saw the matchup, and I knew it,” said one interested observer.

James’ older brother and NFL star, Dalvin Cooke, was watching on TV on October 17, when James exited the backfield and lined up wide. Alabama inside linebacker Christian Harris stepped on him in singles coverage.

The result: an 82-yard touchdown pass to Cook, the longest for Georgia since 2013.

“He’s a versatile back so I expect him,” Dalvin said on the phone Wednesday from Minnesota, where he is in his fourth season with the Vikings and the NFL’s fifth leading race. “I have high hopes for him, bigger shoes than anyone can imagine and he can imagine for himself. He knows how hard I am on him, how hard I push him. I think he’s just scratching the surface of what you’re going to see this year. It’s a surprise not just for me, but for everyone.”

On paper, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Cook’s third Bulldog season doesn’t look much different from his first two.

Number change

Vikings star running back Dalvin Cook was considering switching his jersey number from 33 to 4 this year, when the NFL passed a rule allowing more freedom of numbers by position group, but not finding out. After that he would have to pay about $1.5 million, decided against it. Buy the current list of unsold No. 33 jerseys, according to Pro Football Talk.

Cook will apparently have to buy the remaining stock of his Fanatics jersey at retail price. As Mike Florio of PFT points out, this sounds quite unfair.

Brother

When Dalvin Cook was 7 years old and was acting for the Carol City Chiefs in the Miami area, he tried to keep his focus during rehearsals. But his younger brother did not make it easy for him.

When James Cook was 3 years old, he wanted to emulate Dalvin and his eldest brother, DeAndre Burnett, who was then 8 years old, and become a football player. So James stole his helmet and pads during practice and used to run around Carol City Park.

“It used to be crazy,” said a Vikings Dalvin, who is second in the NFL for 1,069 yards this season. “We knew he wanted to play football so badly because he would run from our practice. He was doing all this at a young age and it was like he had to hit the ground.

Jersey Number

So Cook will be wearing Number 33 for at least one more season, despite the switch. It hasn’t been reported, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Cook gave notice to switch to No. 4 in 2022. The rules allow them to do so at no cost, so keep that in mind if you’re considering buying a Cooke 33 jersey this year.

In other Jersey news, it appears that Vikings free agent pickup Patrick Peterson is going back to his college No. Since he is changing teams, he doesn’t have to pay anything. Pietersen wore 21 during his time with the Cardinals.
