Like anyone else, the NFL power rankings enjoy a good meme. So, in an attempt to devise a way to summarize the first quarter of the NFL season (thanks, the new schedule), we tried to do our variation of the “how it started versus how it’s going” meme, using our confidence ratings. Decided to author NFL Nation.
In our weekly takeaway, our writers give confidence ratings to the teams they cover on their individual 1-10 scale, based on how they feel about their team progressing at that point in time. We decided to compare their ratings from week one (when everyone is fresh and the possibilities are endless) to how they felt after seeing six weeks of action (five weeks for those teams), while detailing that process. Giving which develops confidence. Some are happy developments (how about those Arizona Cardinals?), some have slanted toward overwhelming disappointment (not looking great on South Beach right now), while others have a steady track. Either way, it serves as a good quarterly progress report.

Allows teams to play on a Sunday night schedule
In 2006, the NFL implemented a “flexible scheduling” element of primetime on Sundays in Weeks 10–15 and Week 17. In 2014 this was extended so that games between weeks 5 and 17 could be affected by flex scheduling. However, between weeks 5 and 10, only two games can be flexed on a Sunday night.
Flexible scheduling ensured quality matches on Sunday nights in those weeks and gave surprising teams a chance to play their way to primetime. The NBC Sunday Night time slot for “Flex” week lists games tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.
Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case Sunday night’s games, tentatively scheduled, will be moved to an early afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not apply to games broadcast on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights.
Just as the six major college football conferences have done for many years, the NFL has the facility to move the starting times of games to Sundays using a 12-day notice format.
For example, a game scheduled for Sunday may run from 1:00 pm. ET kickoff until 8:15 p.m. Start, but changes will be made and will be announced no later than last Tuesday, 12 days ago. Sunday afternoon games, as before, can still be moved between 1:00 and 4:05 or 4:25 pm. ET.
In Week 17, a decision to move the start time may be made at six days’ notice, to ensure Sunday night’s play with effect from the playoffs.
