Cardiff City have appointed former Ireland boss Mick McCarthy as their new manager until the end of this season, who will replace the sacked Neil Harris, the championship team announced on Friday.
McCarthy coached the national team twice and reached the knockout stages of the 2002 World Cup. He has also managed English sides Millwall, Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town. The 61-year-old’s last coaching position was at Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia, a role he left on 6 January after only two months in charge following disappointing results.
“I’m happy to be here,” McCarthy told Cardiff City TV. “I’m thrilled with the opportunity … We have a good squad of players and I’m looking forward to getting to work. I want to bring the club back to winning games and I want to put a smile back on the players’ faces If we do that, we will bring back the smiles on the fans.”
McCarthy will be joined at the Welsh Capital by assistant manager Terry Connor, while James Robbery and Andy Dibbler will continue as first team coach and goalkeeping coach.
Cardiff are ranked 15th in the 24-team league, with 29 points from 24 matches and have lost their last five games.

McCarthy was to travel to Bratislava with the Irish team this week for a Euro2020 playoff game against Slovakia, but has been tentatively put back in June, while the tournament has been postponed until next summer. Right now the manager is at home with his wife, unable to make direct contact with friends or wider family.
“I should have been at the training ground in Abbotstown with the players today, getting ready for Slovakia and working out size and game plans,” the 61-year-old said in an interview for the FAI’s own website on Monday. “Instead, I am back home in Bromley and isolated because two of our close neighbors have been diagnosed with coronavirus and it is very real and very frightening for us now.

The new offering comes courtesy of a Twitter user simply known as Jamie, who contrasted McCarthy’s raucous northern vocals to laid-back beats.
While it may seem like the most unexpected combinations, Jamie’s effort has since gone viral – attracting nearly 3000 retweets and 9000 likes.

The song sees Jamie borrowing portions of McCarthy’s voice as he mumbles: “Give him a nudge and tell him to take his gob off”, before other comments from the former Republic of Ireland manager. The selection is heard.
“It’s not about one person, it’s about the whole team. It has to be,” McCarthy offers at a rallying cry.
Roy Keane
Prior to the incident, Keane was the captain of the Irish national team; Since his senior debut under Jack Charlton and then-captain McCarthy, Keane has been having problems with the Irish side’s preparations. He considered the preparations of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to be unprofessional and challenged both Charlton and McCarthy in several notable incidents.
Keane’s issues with Irish management were camp conditions, travel arrangements (which caused players to sit in second class seats on flights, while FAI officers sat in first class), tactics, expectations, diet and McCarthy’s ability. Keane states in his autobiography that prior to the World Cup qualifier versus the Netherlands, Irish players were eating cheese sandwiches because a more suitable pre-match meal of pasta was not available.
