Astros starting pitcher Lance McCullers is likely to be ruled out for the American League Championship Series due to a forearm strain, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightingale.

If Houston reaches the World Series after beating the Red Sox, the McCullers could return to the Astros, per USA Today.

McCullers, 28, posted an ERA of 3.16 at the start of this season at 28. He made two starts for the Astros in the ALDS, earning only one run in 10 2/3 innings. Houston overtook the White Sox in four games to advance to the franchise’s fifth straight ALCS.

The Astros have not announced a starter for Game 1 on Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:07 from Minute Maid Park in Houston.

His father, Lance McCullers, played in Major League Baseball from 1985 to 1992.

McCuller is a Catholic and spoke about his faith in a video for Astros Faith and Family Night in 2015.

McCullers married longtime girlfriend Cara Kilfoyle in December 2015. Their first child, a daughter, was born in December 2019.

In 2016, the Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established by McCullers and his family to advocate for stray and homeless animals.

Contract

Pitchers Lance McCullers Jr. and the Houston Astros on Friday finalized an $85 million, five-year contract covering 2022-26.

The McCullers agreed to a $6.5 million, one-year contract on January 15, which avoided pay arbitration. He would have been eligible for free agency after this year’s World Series.

Their new agreement calls for a $3.5 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days of contract approval by the commissioner’s office, and a salary of $15.25 million in both 2022 and 2023, and $17 million annually from 2024-26 .

The 27-year-old returned in 2020 after missing a season following Tommy John’s surgery. He was 3-3 with a 3.93 ERA and had 56 strikeouts in 11 last season, earning $1,518,519 from a $4.1 million salary.

Era

The Astros assigned the McCullers to the starting rotation at the start of the 2017 season. From May 6–23, he gave 22 scoreless innings, the longest scoreless innings by Astros pitchers, as Roy Oswalt completed 32 runs from August 27 to September 11, 2008. In the same period, McCullers also became the first Astros pitcher. In 1984, Nolan Ryan scored no runs in at least five innings in each of four consecutive matches.

For the month of May, the McCullers claimed his first career American League (AL) Pitcher of the Month award. He was credited with a 4–0 record in six starts. He allowed a .164 batting average against an AL-leading 0.99 earned run average (ERA), with 21 hits and 37 strikeouts (BAA). He finished second in wins, third in BAA, and fifth in strikeouts.

2021

On March 24, 2021, the McCullers and the Astros agreed to a five-year, $85MM contract extension, which includes a $3.5MM signing bonus.[19] During the 2021 season, he added a wide slider to his arsenal. [20] He finished the 2021 season with a 13–5 record, a 3.16 ERA and 185 strikeouts with 28 starts in 162 1/3 innings. He led the major leagues with 76 walks. He gave 4.21 walks per 9 innings, which is the highest in the Major.

Splits

McCullers (front) was dropped from the Astros’ roster for the ALCS against the Red Sox.

The move was an expected one, as reports emerged on Thursday that McCullers was not able to pitch in the series after dropping his start in Game 4 of the ALDS against the White Sox with forearm trouble. While it is not believed that he is dealing with a long-term issue, it is no surprise that he will be missed at least some of the time. It remains to be seen whether the Astros will get a chance to pitch in the World Series to clinch the win. Jake Odorizzi was added to the roster after leaving for ALDS and could be added to Houston’s rotation in the absence of the McCullers.

The McCullers left their debut in Game 4 of the ALDS against the White Sox with discomfort going forward. While an MRI revealed no long-term concerns, the injury is expected to prevent him from pitching in, at least for the immediate future. The progress of the Astros is not yet clear whether they will be in contention for the World Series. In the meantime, Houston could turn to Jake Odorizzi, who was dropped from the ALDS roster, or potentially Jack Greinke, who was all set to start after missing time at the end of the regular season with a neck injury. Can’t get out.
