Contract
There was some concern when the New York Rangers signed Artemi Panarin to a seven-year, $81.5 million contract. In addition to having the second-highest cap hit in the NHL, it also placed him under contract during the 2025–26 season. Panarin will be 34 when that season begins.
In his first year as a ranger, investing in Panarin paid off beyond expectations. He was a finalist for the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award. He finished third in scoring, second in assists and first in sum strength points. Most important, he played well with everyone and made the Rangers a fun team to watch.
It is especially gratifying that Panarin turned down large offers to play for Rangers. He reportedly passed out rich contracts from the Islanders and the Blue Jackets because he wanted the bright lights of Broadway. If he continues to play the same way he did in his first year, he could go down as the most successful free agent to sign in franchise history.
Injury
Artemi Panarin will miss the final three games of the season for the New York Rangers, suffering a lower body injury and losing to the Washington Capitals 6-3 on Monday.
Defensemen Jacob Troba (upper body) and Ryan Lindgren (upper body) will also not play again this season. Left winger Chris Kreider keeps up with a lower body injury day in and day out.
Rangers were out of Stanley Cup playoff contention on Monday.
Panarin was injured at 7:40 of the second period when he was thrown into the ice by Washington forward Tom Wilson during a post-whistle brawl near the Capital Nets.
Wilson was assessed a double-minor for ruffing and 10 minutes of misconduct. He was fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under a collective bargaining agreement, by the NHL Department of Player Safety for roughing Rangers forward Pavel Buchanevich.

The New York Rangers forward is making generous donations to front line workers and is also doing a little painting while practicing his power play form.
On Friday, he announced his engagement to model girlfriend Alisa Znarok, who also happens to be the daughter of former Russian hockey star and longtime KHL and international coach Oleg Znarok.
