Deandre Edoneille Chidike Ayton (born July 23, 1998) is a Bahamian professional basketball player for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for the Arizona Wildcats in the Pac-12 Conference in the 2017–18 season and was a consensus five-star prospect in the Class of 2017, as well as a McDonald’s All-American. Ayton was selected with the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft by the Suns. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2019. Ayton attended Balboa School in California and started on the varsity basketball team for two years. As a sophomore in 2014–15, Ayton led Balboa to a 17–14 record, averaging 21 points, 16 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game. He racked up double-doubles in 21 of 22 regular season games. That summer, he averaged 16.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks a game for Supreme Court AAU (California) on the Under Armour circuit.

Agent
The Phoenix Suns’ reluctance to offer a maximum rookie contract extension to 2018 No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton has stalled discussions on a deal, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.
Ayton, a key part of the Suns’ run to the 2021 NBA Finals, has no intention of accepting a deal less than the comparable max contracts signed by several of his 2018 NBA draft classmates, including Atlanta’s Trae Young, Dallas’ Luka Doncic, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Denver’s Michael Porter Jr., sources told ESPN. His agents are Bill Duffy and Nima Namakian.
Suspension
Deandre Ayton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, has been suspended 25 games after testing positive for a banned substance, the NBA has announced. The Phoenix Suns center was caught using a diuretic, which violates the NBA-NBPA’s anti-drug policy. He is appealing the suspension.
The suspension is a major blow to the Suns, who have been the basement of the Western Conference the last four seasons and were hoping to take a jump up the standings this year behind the development of Ayton. Phoenix won its first game of the season earlier this week, defeating the Sacramento Kings behind an impressive performance from Ayton, who finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and was a game-high +25 on his time on the floor.
Draft class
During the Suns’ successful quest to eliminate the Lakers in the Western Conference quarterfinals, Phoenix center Deandre Ayton averaged 15.8 points and earned a shooting percentage of 77.6. He is not the only member of the 2018 NBA draft class putting up eye-popping numbers in the postseason this year.
Ayton, teammate Mikal Bridges, Luka Dončić, Michael Porter Jr. and Trae Young all have made headlines this postseason, each scoring more than 20 points in at least one game. Ayton was the first pick in 2018, Dončić was third, Young fifth, Bridges 10th and Porter 14th.
Rebound
Ayton recorded 18 points (8-11 FG, 2-2 FT), nine rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes during Sunday’s Game 3 loss to the Bucks.
Pick
On June 21, 2018, the Phoenix Suns selected Ayton with the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA. He was the franchise’s first No. 1 pick in their history. Never before had the player picked with the first overall selection gone to a team from the state where he played in high school and college before entering the NBA. Ayton joined the 2018 NBA Summer League Suns squad on July 1, 2018, signing his rookie-scale contract five days later.
