Highlights

One of the few bright spots for Minnesota in 2015-16 was the play of center-to-winger Charlie Coyle. Cuckoo had the year we’ve all been waiting for as his rookie season boasted goals, points and career highs at SOG. Still, despite its better game, wild fans shouldn’t be too quick to jump on the cuckoo bandwagon. This means that even though the cuckoo did improve, it was inconsistent for periodic parts of the year. That was good, not great, not now.

One reason why Charlie Coyle hasn’t gone all hands on deck is that we also saw such puzzling and potentially thought-provoking puzzles this season in people like Nino Niedreiter and Jason Zucker. Both had breakout seasons in 2014–15, only to take a step back in 2016. While Nino and Zucker’s down numbers this season were hard to bear, Fletcher shouldn’t give up on both of them, and neither should Coyle enter Summer thinking he’s at the pinnacle of his game. For that matter, neither should wild/cuckoo fans. It’s paramount for Wilde to just continue the track he’s on and build on his 2015-16 campaign. If so, we may have seen a mere preview of the power-forward’s true potential.
