Drafted out of high school in 2010 by the Detroit Tigers, Castellanos became one of the top prospects in baseball. Castellanos appeared in the 2012 All-Star Futures Game, and was named the Most Valuable Player of the contest. He made his MLB debut on September 1, 2013. On July 31, 2019, the Tigers traded him to the Chicago Cubs. Prior to the 2020 season, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Detroit Tigers selected Castellanos with the 44th pick in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft. He was rated by Baseball America as the third best power hitting prospect and fourteenth best overall prospect prior to the draft. He slipped because of his commitment to the University of Miami.
He signed with the Tigers, receiving a $3.45 million signing bonus, the highest bonus at that point ever given to a player taken after the first round. The deal was almost invalidated, as the Tigers’ email to the office of the Commissioner of Baseball was not received until three minutes after the midnight deadline on August 15, 2010; a text message about the deal to the Commissioner’s Office received at 11:59 convinced the Commissioner to approve the deal.

Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos’ impressive performance at the plate in Cincinnati’s 12-2 win against the Cardinals on Wednesday drew some suspicion from St. Louis manager Mike Shildt.
After Castellanos hit his second home run of the game in the second inning, Shildt requested that the umpires inspect the slugger’s bat. The 29-year-old complied, and after a review with an umpiring crew in New York, officials concluded the lumber did not influence his home runs.
Castellanos had a chip in his bat — the same one he’d used during the Reds-Cardinals series this week, along with a number of other times this season — but said one of the umpires was aware.
Deep Drive To Left Field
Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos has a knack for hitting home runs at awkward moments. It was Castellanos who was at bat last August in Kansas City when Reds announcer Thom Brennaman was attempting to apologize for being caught using a homophobic slur and interrupted himself to call Castellanos’s solo dinger.
“From the bottom of my heart, I am so very, very sorry,” Brennaman said somberly. “I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith—as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos. It will be a home run. And so that will make it a 4–0 ballgame.”

He married his high school sweetheart, Vanessa Hernandez, they both have a son together named Liam. They divorced in 2017.
Castellanos started dating Jessica Gomez in 2017 and they married on February 8, 2021.
