The United States men’s national team had a chance to kick-start their World Cup qualifying campaign on Sunday with a win, and they tripped up along the way. Gregg Berhalter’s squad followed up the 0-0 draw in El Salvador on Wednesday with an underwhelming 1-1 draw with Canada in Nashville.
Christian Pulisic made his long-awaited return from COVID, but without key contributors Weston McKennie (suspended) and Gio Reyna (hamstring), the Americans once again looked like an disconnected 11 players on the pitch and were outplayed in the second half. In truth, Canada had a couple of quality chances to take all three points, so the U.S. may just count their blessings that it wasn’t worse.

There will be 12 qualifying matches remaining after Sunday,
but there is no doubt that there is real pressure on both the USA and Canada ahead of their CONCACAF World Cup qualifier, especially in the case of the Americans who will be the hosts in Nashville’s Nissan Stadium.
A slow start and some costly home defeats led to the USA failing to make the 2018 World Cup. It needs a win to avoid inevitable comparisons with the last qualifying disaster.

The memory of the USMNT’s 2018 World Cup failure is slowly fading thanks to the two trophies the USA won during the summer against Mexico: the Nations League and Gold Cup. But U.S. national team head coach Gregg Berhalter has already pointed out that those titles will mean little without qualification to Qatar 2022. A win in El Salvador, where the USA is undefeated in three qualifying visits (1-0-2), would help continue to distance this young, new-look USMNT from the team that came up short in qualifying the last time.

Thursday night’s match provided an introduction to the rigors of Concacaf World Cup qualifying for many of the USMNT’s young player pool. Twelve of 16 players made their World Cup qualifying debut for the USA in the match against El Salvador, tying a modern-era record set in the opening game of 1998 World Cup qualifying on Nov. 3, 1996 vs. Guatemala in Washington, D.C. Gio Reyna became the second-youngest U.S. player to start a qualifying match, following only Christian Pulisic. Also making his qualifying debut, Tyler Adams became the youngest player to captain the USMNT in the modern era.

On paper, the clash in El Salvador looked like three winnable points for the USMNT, but Christian Pulisic, Zack Steffen and Timothy Weah were all unavailable and two of the three stars’ replacements felt flat in their stead (Matt Turner in goal was the exception). Simply put, the result was acceptable, but the performance left far too much to be desired.
