Is AJ Cole Good? NFL Performance Explained

Yes. AJ Cole is widely regarded as an excellent NFL punter, based on his career achievements, long-distance kicking ability, and field-position control.

His accomplishments provide strong evidence of his quality. He earned Pro Bowl selections in 2021, 2022, and 2023, along with Associated Press First-Team All-Pro honors in 2021 and 2023.

Several statistics help explain why he has earned that reputation.

• Long-distance punting: Cole recorded an 83-yard punt in 2023, the longest in Raiders franchise history according to the team’s announcement.

• Strong average: He averaged 50.8 yards per punt in 2024, a career high at that time.

• Field-position control: His ability to place punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line helps the Raiders put opposing offenses in difficult positions.

• Consistency: He has maintained a long-term role with the Raiders since entering the NFL in 2019.

Cole’s 2026 performance has also been impressive. According to Pro Football Focus data updated on October 23, 2026, he had an 88.5 punting grade, ranking first among 33 qualified punters at that point. The same report listed a 43.2-yard net average and 10 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

These figures indicate that Cole offers more than raw kicking distance. His effectiveness also depends on limiting return opportunities and giving his defense favorable starting positions.

Cole attended North Carolina State University, where he played for the Wolfpack from 2015 to 2018. He appeared in 52 college games and finished with 9,288 punting yards. His college average was 42.2 yards per punt.

Despite his college experience, no NFL team selected him in the 2019 draft. Instead, the Raiders signed him as an undrafted free agent on May 6, 2019.

He then earned his place on the roster through a rookie minicamp tryout. That opportunity marked the beginning of a professional career that eventually included multiple Pro Bowl selections, All-Pro recognition, and a lucrative contract extension.
