Alex Ovechkin Announces 22nd NHL Season Will Be His Last With the Washington Capitals

Alex Ovechkin has confirmed that the 2026-27 NHL season will be the final season of his legendary career. The Washington Capitals captain announced Monday that he plans to retire after completing his 22nd NHL season, officially beginning the farewell chapter of one of hockey’s greatest careers.

Ovechkin shared the news with his teammates before the Capitals published his message on social media. Although the decision is emotional, the 41-year-old superstar said he believes retirement is the right choice for himself and his family.

“It’s sad, but it is what it is,” Ovechkin told his teammates. “It’s hard, but let’s enjoy it and let’s do some special things this year.”

Ovechkin Confirms Final NHL Season

Ovechkin signed a one-year contract with Washington during the offseason, and his decision to make the 2026-27 campaign his last was not entirely unexpected. He turned 41 on September 17 and said he and his family had reached the decision over the past several months.

In a statement released ahead of the Capitals’ home opener, Ovechkin emphasized how much the sport still means to him.

The decision marks the beginning of the final season for a player who has spent his entire NHL career with Washington. Since entering the league in 2005-06, Ovechkin has become synonymous with the Capitals franchise.

Ovechkin Owns the NHL’s Career Goals Record

One of the biggest reasons Ovechkin’s career will be remembered forever is his incredible goal-scoring achievement.

Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record in April 2025, establishing himself as the league’s all-time leader in goals. He entered the 2026-27 season with 929 career goals.

That record is the defining achievement of a career filled with individual honors and team success. Ovechkin has also won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year, captured the Hart Trophy as league MVP three times and led the NHL in scoring nine times.

A Legendary Capitals Career

Ovechkin has worn a Washington Capitals jersey throughout his entire NHL career. His arrival helped transform the franchise and made him one of the most recognizable stars in hockey.

His greatest team accomplishment came in 2018, when he led Washington to its first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history. Ovechkin was named playoff MVP after helping the Capitals complete their championship run.

Now, he enters his final season with another opportunity to chase the Stanley Cup.

Capitals Build Around Ovechkin for One More Run

Washington has made several moves designed to strengthen the roster around its veteran captain and younger core.

The Capitals acquired Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch through trades while adding forward Boone Jenner and defenseman Vincent Desharnais in free agency. The moves give Washington additional depth as the team looks to make another deep playoff run.

Ovechkin believes the Capitals have the talent to make the most of his final season.

“We have an unbelievable team this year,” Ovechkin said. “Let’s make the playoffs, let’s have fun and enjoy the moment because times fly.”

The End of an Iconic NHL Era

The announcement brings the career of one of the NHL’s most accomplished players into its final chapter. For more than two decades, Ovechkin has been one of hockey’s biggest stars, combining elite goal scoring with remarkable longevity.

His final season will give Capitals fans and hockey supporters around the world one last opportunity to watch the legendary forward compete in the NHL.

While the end of his playing career is approaching, Ovechkin’s impact on Washington and the league will continue long after he leaves the ice. His NHL career goals record, Stanley Cup championship, MVP awards and extraordinary consistency have secured his place among hockey’s all-time greats.

For now, however, Ovechkin is focused on enjoying one final season and giving the Capitals another chance to compete for the Stanley Cup.
