Dre Greenlaw delivered one of his most emotional performances of the 2026 NFL season Sunday, helping the San Francisco 49ers defeat the Denver Broncos 24-14 while facing his former team and coach Sean Payton.
Greenlaw entered the matchup with plenty of motivation after spending the 2025 season in Denver. His return to San Francisco has already been a major storyline this season, but Sunday’s game added another chapter after Greenlaw said he felt disrespected by Payton during his difficult year with the Broncos.
Dre Greenlaw Dominates Against His Former Team
Greenlaw was everywhere in the 49ers’ victory, recording a team-high 12 tackles, his highest total since December 25, 2023. He also forced a fumble as San Francisco’s defense held Denver without a touchdown for the first 55 minutes.
The performance was especially significant because Greenlaw spent the 2025 season with Denver after signing a three-year, $31.5 million contract.
His time with the Broncos was severely disrupted by injuries. He missed Denver’s first six games because of a torn quadriceps and later missed the final two games because of a hamstring injury. He finished the season with 43 tackles across eight games before Denver released him in March.
Against his former team, Greenlaw looked like the player San Francisco remembered.
Sean Payton Dispute Adds Fuel to Greenlaw’s Performance
The biggest storyline surrounding Dre Greenlaw after the game involved Sean Payton.
Greenlaw said he believed Payton began distancing himself from him late in the 2025 season because the Broncos were unhappy with the return they were getting from their investment after his injury problems.
According to Greenlaw, the situation became personal because he said Payton would walk past him without acknowledging him. Greenlaw also said he was informed by his agent that Denver was releasing him rather than receiving the news directly from Payton.
That history appeared to fuel Greenlaw throughout Sunday’s game.
After making an early tackle near the Denver sideline, Greenlaw pointed toward Payton and shouted. Following the final whistle, the linebacker again confronted the Broncos coach near midfield before Fred Warner pulled him away.
Payton offered a much calmer assessment afterward, saying he thinks highly of Greenlaw and appreciates the emotion he brings to football.
Greenlaw’s 49ers Comeback Has Been Impressive
The 2026 season has represented a major turnaround for Greenlaw.
After a difficult 2024 season in San Francisco and an injury-plagued 2025 campaign in Denver, Greenlaw admitted that he had considered walking away from football during the darkest period of his career.
He suffered a torn Achilles during the Super Bowl in February 2024 and appeared in only two games that season, failing to finish either contest. After moving to Denver, he again struggled to stay healthy.
By the time he returned to action last season, he had played just two games over a span of 614 days.
Conversations with close friends and fellow linebackers Fred Warner and Azeez Al-Shaair helped Greenlaw reconsider his future.
He eventually returned to San Francisco on a one-year, $6 million contract in March 2026.
Greenlaw Has Become a Key Part of the 49ers Defense
The move back to San Francisco has worked out extremely well.
Greenlaw now has 34 tackles through four games, helping the 49ers begin the season 4-0 while allowing only 16 points per game.
His physical style and emotional intensity have made him one of the most recognizable personalities on San Francisco’s defense. However, that intensity has also created problems during his career.
Greenlaw has accumulated seven unnecessary roughness penalties and was previously ejected after a sideline altercation with an Eagles staff member. He also served a one-game suspension last season after chasing and verbally threatening a referee following a loss to the Giants.
That history made Sunday’s performance even more notable because his teammates believed he managed to control his emotions enough to remain effective.
Fred Warner and Trent Williams React to Greenlaw
Fred Warner has been one of the players closest to Greenlaw throughout his career, and he was instrumental in helping pull his teammate away from Payton after the game.
Warner also acknowledged how difficult Greenlaw’s recent journey had been.
Trent Williams joked that Greenlaw appeared to be operating at nearly full emotional intensity during the game, but he was impressed that the linebacker managed to maintain enough control to finish strong.
Defensive lineman Romello Height similarly said it was good to see Greenlaw playing with that energy and getting what he viewed as revenge against his former team.
George Kittle’s Touchdown Creates Another Greenlaw Moment
Greenlaw’s emotions weren’t limited to his confrontation with Payton.
When George Kittle caught a game-sealing 56-yard touchdown with just over two minutes remaining, Greenlaw sprinted down the sideline to celebrate with him.
Kittle later joked about Greenlaw seemingly appearing out of nowhere during the celebration.
The moment summed up Greenlaw’s afternoon: intense, emotional and completely invested in helping San Francisco secure the victory.
Dre Greenlaw’s 2026 Season Has Changed the Narrative
Just months after wondering whether his football career was over, Dre Greenlaw is once again playing a major role for the 49ers.
His return has provided San Francisco with a physical presence at linebacker, while Sunday’s performance showed how much the matchup with Denver meant to him.
The 24-14 victory moved the 49ers to 4-0, and Greenlaw’s 12-tackle performance gave the team another reminder of what it regained when he returned to San Francisco.
For Greenlaw, however, Sunday’s win was about more than the standings. It was an opportunity to answer what he believed was disrespect with his performance on the field.
And against his former team, he made sure everyone noticed.
