Major League Baseball has opened its 2026 postseason with a dramatic slate of Wild Card Series action, highlighted by a dominant performance from San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King and a historic reminder of MLB’s greatest postseason no-hitters.
The latest MLB scores featured four Game 1 victories: the Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3, the Chicago White Sox beat the Houston Astros 6-3, the New York Yankees shut out the Boston Red Sox 9-0, and the Padres defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-0.
Padres Game: Michael King Nearly Makes MLB History
The Padres game against the Cubs produced one of the night’s biggest stories.
Michael King carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Petco Park before Nico Hoerner broke it up with an infield single. Manny Machado was unable to make a clean play on the ball, ending King’s bid for history.
King finished the game with eight strikeouts over seven innings and 97 pitches as San Diego cruised to an 8-0 victory.
The Padres also received major offensive contributions from Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts, with each player hitting a home run.
San Diego now leads the best-of-three National League Wild Card Series 1-0 and is one victory away from advancing to face the Milwaukee Brewers.
Every No-Hitter in MLB Postseason History
King’s performance also brought renewed attention to the rarest pitching accomplishments in MLB postseason history.
There have been only three official no-hitters in MLB postseason history.
Don Larsen’s Perfect Game — 1956
The first postseason no-hitter came in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series when New York Yankees pitcher Don Larsen threw a perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Larsen retired all 27 batters he faced without allowing a hit or a walk. The Yankees eventually won the World Series 4-3, and Larsen was named World Series MVP.
Roy Halladay — 2010
It took 54 years for another postseason no-hitter.
Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter in Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Cincinnati Reds.
Halladay struck out eight batters and guided Philadelphia to a 4-0 victory at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies went on to sweep Cincinnati in the NLDS.
Astros Combined No-Hitter — 2022
The most recent postseason no-hitter came during Game 4 of the 2022 World Series.
The Houston Astros used four pitchers to shut out the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0. Cristian Javier started the game and delivered six no-hit innings, while Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly each completed an inning.
Houston eventually won the World Series in six games, with Jeremy Peña becoming the first rookie to win World Series MVP.

The opening day of the 2026 MLB postseason produced four decisive results:
- Braves 5, Phillies 3 — Atlanta leads the series 1-0.
- White Sox 6, Astros 3 — Chicago leads the series 1-0.
- Yankees 9, Red Sox 0 — New York leads the series 1-0.
- Padres 8, Cubs 0 — San Diego leads the series 1-0.
The Yankees received a spectacular performance from Ben Rice, who went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs. Cam Schlittler also delivered 6⅓ scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts.
For Atlanta, Austin Riley provided the decisive blow with a three-run homer against Phillies closer Jhoan Duran.
Meanwhile, White Sox rookie Hagen Smith worked three scoreless innings as Chicago’s opener in the win over Houston.
