Former Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams is hoping for another opportunity in the NFL, and he has already made his interest in returning to Detroit known.
The 31-year-old running back recently contacted Lions head coach Dan Campbell about a potential comeback. Williams has been away from the NFL since 2024, but he remains determined to return to football and finish his career on his own terms.

According to reports, Williams contacted Campbell recently to inform the Lions coach that he is preparing for an NFL comeback. Detroit has not committed to bringing the veteran running back back to the roster, but Campbell indicated that the team would keep Williams in mind if its situation changes.
The timing is notable because the Lions are looking for additional depth behind Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs has carried a significant workload early in the season, while Isiah Pacheco is expected to miss an extended period because of a back injury.
Sione Vaki and Jacob Saylors are currently among the players providing depth behind Gibbs, leaving the Lions with a potential need for another experienced option.
Williams Had His Best NFL Season in Detroit
Williams became a fan favorite during his two seasons with the Lions in 2021 and 2022. Across those two campaigns, he recorded 415 rushing attempts for 1,667 yards and 20 touchdowns.
His 2022 season was particularly impressive. Williams rushed for 1,066 yards and led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns. His touchdown total also established a then-franchise record for the Lions.
That production made Williams an important part of Detroit’s offense and helped establish his connection with the team’s fan base.
