The Purdue football team dropped a high-scoring Week 3 matchup against UCLA, falling 52-38 to the Bruins at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
The loss moved Purdue to 1-1, while UCLA improved to 2-0. The UCLA vs Purdue matchup featured explosive plays throughout the afternoon, with both teams producing big passing and rushing gains.
Purdue vs UCLA: Bruins Pull Away in High-Scoring Game
The Purdue vs UCLA game quickly turned into an offensive shootout. UCLA jumped ahead 21-7 in the first quarter, but Purdue responded with 14 unanswered points to tie the game at 21-21 early in the second quarter.
UCLA then regained control before halftime with a field goal, taking a 24-21 lead into the break.
Purdue continued to produce offensively in the second half, but UCLA consistently answered with touchdowns. The Bruins eventually extended their advantage to 52-38 in the fourth quarter.
Ryan Browne Leads Purdue Passing Attack
Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne delivered an impressive statistical performance despite the defeat. He surpassed 335 passing yards and threw three touchdown passes.
Browne connected with Xavier Townsend for a 75-yard touchdown in the first quarter, giving Purdue an immediate answer after UCLA’s opening score.
Townsend was one of Purdue’s biggest offensive weapons, finishing with more than 100 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions. His 75-yard touchdown was one of several explosive passing plays produced by the Boilermakers.
Purdue also received touchdown contributions from Fame Ijeboi and George Burhenn as the offense continued to move the ball against UCLA.
Nico Iamaleava, UCLA Offense Make Difference
UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava helped lead the Bruins to 52 points. He produced multiple touchdown passes and surpassed 200 passing yards before halftime.
Semaj Morgan caught two early touchdown passes from Iamaleava, while Landon Ellis added another touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
UCLA’s rushing attack was equally effective. Wayne Knight scored twice on the ground, while Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas also found the end zone.
Knight entered the game having already established himself as one of college football’s leading rushing touchdown producers, and he added to that total against Purdue.
UCLA Score Reaches 50 Points
The final UCLA score was 52-38, marking the Bruins’ first 50-point performance since their 59-7 victory over North Carolina Central on Sept. 16, 2023, according to the game data.
UCLA also reached 40 points for the first time since its 45-24 victory over California on Sept. 5.
The Bruins were particularly effective on third down, converting five consecutive third downs during one stretch. They finished the game converting 5 of 7 third-down opportunities at one point in the second half.
Purdue Football Schedule After UCLA
The next stretch of the Purdue football schedule includes several Big Ten challenges.
Purdue is scheduled to face Notre Dame on Sept. 26 before traveling to Illinois on Oct. 3. The Boilermakers then have games against Minnesota, Washington, Penn State, Maryland, Iowa and Wisconsin later in the season.
Purdue entered the UCLA game at 1-0 after defeating Indiana State 44-19 before losing a close 38-36 game to Wake Forest on Sept. 12.
UCLA Football Schedule Continues
The UCLA football schedule also moves into a demanding portion of the season. After the Purdue matchup, the Bruins are scheduled to face conference opponents including Nebraska, Northwestern, Michigan State, Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota and others.
UCLA’s 2-0 start gives the Bruins early momentum, and the 52-point performance against Purdue provides another notable offensive result for the program.
