The Detroit Red Wings have named Shawn Horcoff their interim general manager, putting the longtime organization executive in charge of hockey operations just two days before training camp begins.
Horcoff takes over following the departure of Steve Yzerman, who is transitioning into a senior adviser role with the organization. The move gives Detroit an experienced internal voice while the franchise continues its search for a permanent head of hockey operations.
Shawn Horcoff Takes Over Red Wings Hockey Operations
The Shawn Horcoff appointment provides the Red Wings with a clear decision-maker as the club prepares for the upcoming NHL season.
Horcoff has been Detroit’s assistant general manager since February 2022 and has also served as general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins. In his interim position, he will oversee day-to-day roster decisions, salary-cap matters and hockey operations personnel.
Red Wings governor and CEO Chris Ilitch said Horcoff has his full support and the authority to make decisions in the organization’s best interests while the search for a permanent leader continues.
The franchise said the search has generated significant interest from executives around the NHL and that Horcoff remains among the candidates being considered for the permanent position.
Horcoff’s Experience With the Red Wings
Horcoff, 47, has been part of the Red Wings organization for several years and has worked across multiple areas of hockey operations.
Before becoming assistant GM, he spent six seasons as Detroit’s director of player development. He previously worked for three seasons as assistant director of player personnel.
His familiarity with Detroit’s players, prospects, contracts and organizational structure makes the transition relatively seamless as the Red Wings approach training camp.
His experience with the Grand Rapids Griffins also gives him additional knowledge of the organization’s developing talent and prospects.
Simon Edvinsson Contract Is an Immediate Priority
One of the biggest tasks facing Horcoff immediately is the contract situation involving defenseman Simon Edvinsson.
Detroit and Edvinsson have been working toward a potential long-term extension. If the two sides want to complete an eight-year agreement, it must be finalized before the NHL’s new collective bargaining agreement takes effect and reduces the maximum contract length to seven years.
That deadline puts additional pressure on the Red Wings’ front office as Horcoff begins his interim tenure.
Dylan Larkin Trade Request Remains Another Challenge
Horcoff also inherits the ongoing situation involving captain Dylan Larkin.
Larkin is expected to attend training camp, but he has not withdrawn his trade request. That leaves Detroit facing an important decision regarding one of the most prominent players on its roster.

Steve Yzerman Moves Into Senior Adviser Role
Yzerman’s departure from the GM position does not mean he is leaving the Red Wings entirely.
The organization confirmed that Yzerman will officially transition to a senior adviser role to Ilitch. He will continue to serve as a resource for leaders throughout the franchise.
Detroit said the decision to make a change followed an evaluation of its hockey operations after a disappointing finish last season. The organization believes a new vision is needed while still maintaining continuity during the offseason.

Although Shawn Horcoff is now running the Red Wings’ hockey operations, Detroit emphasized that the interim appointment does not end its search for a permanent leader.
The franchise said it has held substantive discussions with executives over the past two months and is looking for an innovative decision-maker capable of guiding the team toward Stanley Cup success.
Horcoff’s performance during this period could influence that search. Because he remains under consideration for the permanent role, the coming weeks could provide an opportunity for him to demonstrate that he is capable of leading the organization on a full-time basis.
For now, the Red Wings have chosen an experienced internal candidate to provide stability at a critical point in the offseason. With training camp approaching, Horcoff’s first priorities will include the Edvinsson contract, the Larkin situation and preparing Detroit for the new NHL season.
