The Marlins vs Diamondbacks matchup ended with a dramatic finish as Arizona rallied for an 8-7 victory over Miami on Monday night. With the Diamondbacks trailing 7-6 entering the bottom of the ninth, Corbin Carroll delivered the decisive blow, launching a two-run walk-off home run to keep Arizona firmly in the National League Wild Card race.
The victory moved the Diamondbacks to 80-71 on the season and kept them within 2.5 games of the San Diego Padres for the final NL Wild Card position. With only 11 games remaining, every win has become increasingly important for Arizona.
Corbin Carroll delivers when the Diamondbacks need him most
Arizona appeared destined for a frustrating loss after falling behind 7-4 in the eighth inning. The Diamondbacks managed to cut the deficit to one before the ninth, setting up an opportunity for one final comeback.
Gabriel Moreno started the ninth with a walk, and Geraldo Perdomo followed with a sacrifice bunt to put the potential winning run into scoring position. That brought Carroll to the plate against Marlins reliever Jack Ralston.
Carroll worked the count to 2-1 before attacking an 82-mph splitter. He drove the pitch toward right field, sending it into the bleachers near the foul pole for a two-run homer.
The blast immediately ended the game and gave Arizona an 8-7 victory.
Diamondbacks overcome another difficult night
The comeback was especially significant because Arizona had struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the game. The Diamondbacks trailed 3-0 early before tying the contest in the third inning.
Pavin Smith opened that inning with a double, while Jordan Lawlar added a single. Lawlar’s aggressive baserunning helped Arizona get on the scoreboard before Lars Nootbaar followed with a home run to make it 3-3.
Miami answered with two home runs in the fourth inning and eventually extended its advantage to 7-4 in the seventh.
Arizona refused to go quietly. Lawlar hit a two-run homer in the eighth to pull the Diamondbacks within one, and Carroll completed the comeback in the ninth.
Corbin Burnes continues his return
Corbin Burnes made his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander worked into the fifth inning but was removed after reaching the expected 75-pitch limit.
Burnes allowed five runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking none. His velocity is still developing as he works his way back, making this another important step in his recovery.
Arizona’s bullpen ultimately kept the game within reach. The Diamondbacks struck out 13 Marlins hitters, their highest total since April 10, when they recorded 16 strikeouts against Philadelphia.
Arizona stays alive in the NL Wild Card race
The timing of Carroll’s home run could hardly have been more important. San Diego defeated Colorado earlier Monday to extend its winning streak to eight games, increasing the pressure on Arizona.
The Diamondbacks improved to 80-71 and remained 2.5 games behind the Padres. With 11 games left, Arizona still has a realistic opportunity to close the gap.
The victory also prevented the Diamondbacks from falling 3.5 games behind San Diego, which would have made the final stretch considerably more difficult.
Arizona’s postseason pursuit now heads into another crucial stretch, with the team needing to continue winning while hoping the Padres finally slow down.

Nootbaar finished with three hits, while Carroll and Lawlar each collected two hits. Moreno also reached base three times through a hit, walk and hit-by-pitch.
