The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Monday night at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, with Reid Detmers delivering a strong start and Jose Siri helping spark the offense.
The loss was another setback for the Mariners, who fell to 70-81 and are now 5½ games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West with only 11 games remaining. The Angels improved to 57-93 with the victory.
Angels Build Early Lead
Los Angeles wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Mike Trout opened the first inning with a single against Mariners rookie Kade Anderson. Jose Siri followed with an RBI double before stealing third and scoring on Vaughn Grissom’s sacrifice fly.
The Angels added two more runs in the third inning. Zach Neto delivered an RBI triple, and Siri followed with a run-scoring single to give Los Angeles a 4-0 advantage.
Siri finished with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, making him one of the biggest contributors in the Angels’ victory.
Cal Raleigh Brings Mariners Back
Seattle responded in the fourth inning thanks to its power-hitting catcher.
Cal Raleigh launched a three-run home run, his 22nd homer of the season, off Detmers. The blast cut the Angels’ lead to 4-3 and briefly shifted momentum toward the Mariners.
It was particularly notable because the homer was the first Detmers had surrendered in seven starts. Before the game, he had allowed only two runs over his previous 39 innings.
J.P. Crawford later added another run for Seattle with a solo home run in the seventh, his 12th of the season, but the Mariners could not complete the comeback.
Reid Detmers Delivers Six Strong Innings
Detmers was instrumental in helping the Angels protect their early advantage. The left-hander pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight.
He improved to 6-8 on the season.
After Detmers departed, Ryan Watson provided 1⅓ scoreless innings. Ben Joyce then worked through a difficult ninth inning, walking two batters before retiring Crawford on a lineout to first base for his fifth save.
Mariners vs Angels Player Highlights
For Seattle, Crawford went 2-for-5 with a home run, one RBI and one run. Randy Arozarena also collected two hits, including his 30th double of the season.
Raleigh finished 1-for-4 but made the biggest offensive impact for Seattle with his three-run homer and three RBIs.
Anderson took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over 4⅓ innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.
For Los Angeles, Siri’s three-hit performance led the nine-hit Angels attack. Denzer Guzman also came through with a two-run single in the fifth inning, restoring the Angels’ three-run cushion.
Mariners’ Playoff Hopes Take Another Hit
The result is particularly important for Seattle because the Mariners entered the game trying to remain in the AL West race.
At 70-81, Seattle now has little room for error with just 11 games left. The Angels, meanwhile, remain last in the division at 57-93 but managed to play spoiler against a Mariners team fighting for postseason positioning.
The Mariners vs Angels matchup ultimately came down to Los Angeles’ early offensive burst and Detmers’ ability to limit Seattle after Raleigh’s fourth-inning homer.
What’s Next for Mariners vs Angels?
The teams will meet again Tuesday. Seattle is scheduled to send Logan Gilbert (12-9, 3.72 ERA) to the mound, while Los Angeles will counter with Ryan Johnson (4-8, 5.12 ERA).
For the Mariners, the next game is crucial as they attempt to keep their postseason hopes alive. The Angels will look to build on their latest victory and continue disrupting Seattle’s late-season push.
