The Yankees vs Twins series opener delivered a dramatic finish Monday night at Target Field, with New York overcoming a late deficit to secure an 8-3 victory and officially clinch an American League playoff berth.
The win moved the New York Yankees to 87-63 on the season and guaranteed them at least a wild-card spot. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Twins fell to 70-80 and have just 12 games remaining as they continue evaluating young talent.
Yankees Rally for Six Runs in Eighth
The Yankees entered the eighth inning trailing 2-1, but their offense exploded for six runs to completely change the game.
George Lombard Jr. started the rally with a leadoff double, while Ryan McMahon followed with an infield single. José Caballero then tied the game with an RBI single against Twins rookie reliever Andrew Morris.
New York took the lead when Ben Rice delivered a two-run single. The Yankees then added even more damage when Aaron Judge stepped to the plate against A.J. Minter.
Judge crushed an 89-mph cutter deep into the left-field stands for a three-run homer, giving New York a commanding 7-2 advantage.
The blast was particularly significant because it was Judge’s first home run since returning from a three-month stint on the injured list.
Aaron Judge Makes Immediate Impact
Judge’s return to the Yankees lineup has been one of the biggest storylines surrounding the club, and his performance against Minnesota provided another reminder of his importance.
His three-run homer not only put the game away but also helped the Yankees celebrate a postseason berth.
New York entered the night needing either a victory or a Toronto Blue Jays loss to officially qualify for the playoffs. The Yankees ultimately received both results, becoming the second American League team to punch its ticket to the postseason.
With 87 wins, New York remains 3½ games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East but owns the second-best record in the American League.
Twins Nearly Pull Off Upset
For much of the night, Minnesota looked capable of spoiling New York’s playoff-clinching opportunity.
Twins starter Dean Kremer delivered one of his best outings since joining Minnesota at the trade deadline. He allowed just two hits and one earned run across 5⅔ innings while striking out five and walking one.
Kremer was particularly effective with his splitter, generating multiple swings and misses and consistently staying ahead in the count.
The Yankees scored their first run when Caballero hit a solo homer in the third inning. But Minnesota responded in the sixth.
Emmanuel Rodriguez Provides Another Highlight
One of the biggest positives for Minnesota was rookie outfielder Emmanuel Rodriguez.
After homering in his first major league at-bat earlier in his debut, Rodriguez continued his impressive introduction to the majors.
In the sixth inning, Rodriguez ripped an 82-mph sweeper from Yankees starter Will Warren into the left-center gap. Spencer Jones misplayed the ball in center field, allowing Josh Bell to score from first.
Rodriguez raced to third and celebrated with his teammates as Minnesota took a 2-1 lead.
The 23-year-old also made several impressive defensive plays, including a sliding catch in foul territory and a strong play near the warning track.
Josh Bell Hits 20th Home Run
Although the Yankees’ eighth-inning explosion put the game out of reach, Minnesota added another run in the bottom half of the inning.
Josh Bell launched a solo home run against Tim Hill, marking his 20th homer of the season. It was the sixth time in his career that Bell has reached the 20-home-run mark.
The blast also brought Bell’s season RBI total to 87.
However, Minnesota’s inability to capitalize with runners in scoring position ultimately proved costly. The Twins left eight runners on base and went just 1-for-8 with a runner on second or third base.
Yankees vs Twins: What Comes Next?
The Yankees vs Twins series continues with two games remaining at Target Field.
For New York, the focus now shifts toward improving its playoff position and potentially catching Tampa Bay in the AL East. The Yankees have already secured postseason baseball, but their final stretch will determine how they enter October.
For Minnesota, the final 12 games are more about player evaluation and building for the future. The Twins have been eliminated from playoff contention, making opportunities for prospects such as Rodriguez increasingly important.
The Yankees’ 8-3 victory will be remembered as both a comeback win and a postseason-clinching moment, highlighted by Judge’s massive three-run homer.
