The UEFA Champions League will open this week with a special tribute to victims of the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal, as European football comes together to show solidarity with communities affected by the disaster.
UEFA has confirmed that all 18 Champions League matches scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will feature a pre-match moment of silence. A solidarity banner carrying the message “You are not alone Nepal” will also be displayed before every fixture.
UEFA Champions League to Pay Tribute to Nepal
The decision comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of catastrophic flooding and landslides. UEFA said the tribute is intended to express support for those who have lost loved ones and those still recovering from the disaster.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin also offered his support to the affected communities, wishing them strength and resilience as recovery efforts continue.
The tribute will take place before every Champions League fixture during this week’s match schedule, ensuring that Europe’s biggest club competition becomes a platform for a message of solidarity.
Champions League Action Begins Tuesday
The new UEFA Champions League matchweek begins Tuesday, with six fixtures scheduled across Europe. Among the headline games is Real Madrid vs Inter Milan, a meeting between two of European football’s most decorated clubs.
Six more matches will be played on Wednesday, followed by another six on Thursday, bringing the total to 18 fixtures.
While attention will naturally focus on the football, each stadium will first pause to remember those affected by the tragedy in Nepal.
Barcelona Begin Their European Campaign Against Feyenoord
Barcelona are also preparing to begin their Champions League journey when they welcome Feyenoord to Camp Nou.
Hansi Flick’s side have made a strong start to the season and are expected to field a competitive lineup for their European opener. Barcelona’s possible XI includes Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsí and Andreas Christensen in defense, with João Cancelo potentially starting at left-back.
In midfield, new signing Rodri is expected to continue alongside Pedri and Fermín López. The attacking trio could feature Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Anthony Gordon, giving Barcelona plenty of pace and creativity.
The match will also begin with the same UEFA-organized tribute to Nepal before the football takes center stage.
UEFA Has Used Football to Mark Major Tragedies Before
This is not the first time European football has paused to remember victims of a major disaster. UEFA previously organized similar commemorations following the 2023 Morocco earthquake and devastating floods in Libya.
The latest tribute once again highlights the ability of football to unite supporters and communities beyond the sport itself.
A Message of Solidarity Across Europe
With all 18 UEFA Champions League matches carrying the same message, clubs, players and supporters across Europe will have an opportunity to stand together with the people of Nepal.
The words “You are not alone Nepal” will be displayed before each fixture, accompanied by a moment of silence.
As the Champions League begins another highly anticipated European campaign, the opening moments of this week’s matches will therefore carry significance far beyond football.
