Atlanta Braves opened their important four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a convincing 5-2 victory Friday night at Citizens Bank Park, strengthening their position atop the National League East.
Chris Sale delivered a strong six-inning performance, while Mauricio Dubón provided the decisive late offense with a two-run home run. The result gives Atlanta an 84-57 record and improves its season record against Philadelphia to 6-1.

Chris Sale was one of the biggest reasons Atlanta was able to protect its early advantage.
The veteran left-hander completed six innings while allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out seven batters and issued only one walk.
Sale also showed excellent composure when Philadelphia threatened.
In the fifth inning, the Phillies put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Sale responded by getting Bryce Harper to pop out and end the inning.
Philadelphia created another scoring opportunity in the sixth when Luis Arráez opened the inning with a double. Sale again shut down the threat, retiring the next three hitters, including two via strikeout.
The outing continued an impressive stretch for Sale and gave Atlanta’s bullpen a manageable lead to protect.
Mauricio Dubón Delivers the Key Blow
The defining moment of the Braves vs Phillies matchup came in the eighth inning.
With Atlanta leading 3-2, Mike Yastrzemski walked with one out. Dubón then stepped to the plate and launched a 390-foot two-run homer to left field.

Philadelphia gradually erased some of Atlanta’s early advantage through Alec Bohm.
Bohm produced an RBI double in the second inning before hitting a solo home run in the fourth. His home run was the first one Sale had surrendered since July 4.
Despite those contributions, the Phillies could not complete the comeback.
Atlanta’s bullpen was outstanding over the final three innings. Didier Fuentes retired all six batters he faced during the seventh and eighth innings, throwing 18 strikes among his 21 pitches.
Raisel Iglesias then closed the game in the ninth, recording a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. The save was his 30th of the season.

The victory was especially significant because of the division implications.
Atlanta entered the series leading Philadelphia, and the 5-2 win increased the Braves’ NL East advantage to five games. Atlanta also improved to 6-1 against the Phillies this season.

If the two teams eventually finish tied in the division standings, Atlanta would secure the head-to-head tiebreaker by winning one of its final six meetings with Philadelphia.

The Phillies will have another opportunity to respond Saturday night.
Atlanta is scheduled to send Martín Pérez to the mound, with the left-hander entering the matchup at 8-8 with a 3.05 ERA.
Philadelphia will counter with Zack Wheeler, who owns an 11-5 record and a 3.31 ERA.
That matchup could be another major test in the NL East race, particularly with the Phillies trying to prevent Atlanta from extending its advantage.
