DeAndre Hopkins has officially begun a new chapter in football, making his coaching debut with Georgia Tech after spending 13 seasons establishing himself as one of the NFL’s most accomplished wide receivers.
Hopkins joined Georgia Tech’s coaching staff as an assistant wide receivers coach, taking on the role as the Yellow Jackets opened their 2026 season against Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes on Thursday.
DeAndre Hopkins Makes Georgia Tech Coaching Debut
The 34-year-old Hopkins transitioned into coaching after an impressive NFL career that lasted from 2013 through 2025. His debut on the Georgia Tech sideline represents a major change for a player who spent more than a decade competing at the highest level.
Although Hopkins is now pursuing coaching, he has not completely closed the door on returning to the NFL. He told fans on Aug. 1 that he was not officially finished with football as a player, leaving open the possibility of another playing opportunity.
For now, however, Hopkins is focused on helping develop the next generation of wide receivers at Georgia Tech.
DeAndre Hopkins’ NFL Career
Hopkins entered the NFL with the Houston Texans and quickly became one of the league’s premier pass catchers. Over the course of his career, he also played for the Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens.
His career statistics underline his consistency and longevity. Hopkins finished with:

- 13,295 receiving yards
- 85 receiving touchdowns
- Five Pro Bowl selections
- Five All-Pro honors

Kyler Murray and the DeAndre Hopkins Blueprint
Hopkins’ impact also remains relevant to the current NFL season through his former partnership with Kyler Murray.
When Hopkins joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 after being acquired from the Houston Texans, he immediately produced at an elite level. In his first season with Murray, Hopkins recorded 115 receptions for 1,407 yards and six touchdowns on 160 targets.
That season has become an important reference point as Murray begins a new chapter with the Minnesota Vikings and looks to establish a strong connection with Justin Jefferson.
The Hopkins-Murray partnership demonstrated that Murray could consistently feed a true No. 1 receiver and help him produce at an elite level. That blueprint could now be particularly important for Jefferson as Minnesota looks for a bounce-back season.
Hopkins’ New Role at Georgia Tech
While his NFL future remains uncertain, Hopkins’ move into coaching gives him an opportunity to pass his knowledge directly to college receivers.
His experience as a high-volume target, five-time Pro Bowler and multiple-time All-Pro gives Georgia Tech’s wide receiver room access to a coach who understands the position from an elite player’s perspective.
The timing also puts Hopkins in an intriguing environment. His first coaching assignment came against Colorado, coached by Deion Sanders, another legendary former NFL player who has moved into college coaching.
What’s Next for DeAndre Hopkins?
The biggest question surrounding Hopkins is whether his coaching career will remain his primary focus or whether an NFL comeback could eventually become possible.
For now, the former star receiver is embracing his new role at Georgia Tech. His playing career has already provided him with an extensive résumé, while his experience working with quarterbacks and elite offenses could make him a valuable mentor for young receivers.
Whether Hopkins eventually returns to the field or continues building his coaching career, his Georgia Tech debut marks the beginning of an interesting new phase for one of the NFL’s most accomplished wide receivers.
