UCF Football Dominates Bethune-Cookman in Historic Season Opener
The UCF football team made a spectacular start to the 2026 season, overwhelming Bethune-Cookman football 73-6 on Thursday night in Orlando. The victory marked the opening of the 20th season at the Bounce House and gave the Knights a record-setting performance in front of their home crowd.
UCF matched its program record for points in a single game while establishing a new school record for largest margin of victory. The Knights’ 67-point triumph surpassed their previous best margin of 64 points, set against Grand Valley State in 1987.
UCF vs Bethune-Cookman: Knights Take Control Early
The UCF vs Bethune-Cookman matchup was effectively decided during the opening minutes. Duke Watson broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run on UCF’s second offensive play, immediately putting the Knights ahead 7-0.
The defense then added another score. Jayden Williams intercepted Bethune-Cookman quarterback Tyler Jefferson and returned the pick 47 yards for a touchdown, pushing UCF’s advantage to 14-0.
Alonza Barnett III added a five-yard rushing touchdown before connecting with Jonathan Bibbs for a 23-yard scoring pass early in the second quarter. That touchdown was Barnett’s 50th career passing touchdown.
By halftime, UCF had built a commanding 38-0 lead.
UCF’s Running Game Leads the Way
The biggest story from the b-cu vs ucf matchup was the Knights’ dominance on the ground. UCF rushed for 360 yards and produced seven rushing touchdowns from six different players.
Watson finished with 110 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Landen Chambers scored twice on the ground. Taevion Swint, Agyeman Addae and Rocco Marriott also found the end zone as UCF continued to pile on points.
The Knights also received contributions from backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins, who threw a touchdown pass to Caleb Rollerson in the third quarter.
UCF finished the game with 560 total yards, while Bethune-Cookman managed only 181.
Barnett III Makes Strong UCF Debut
Quarterback Alonza Barnett III provided an efficient performance in his first game wearing the Black and Gold. He passed for 158 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for another score.
Barnett’s touchdown pass to Bibbs helped UCF extend its advantage, while his running ability added another dimension to an already dominant offense.
Will Stone also enjoyed a memorable night, making his first career field goal from 34 yards. He added 10 extra points, tying a single-game UCF record.
Historic Numbers for UCF
The result was significant beyond the final score. UCF improved to 30-1 against FCS opponents since moving to the FBS level in 1996.
The Knights also extended their season-opening winning streak to 11 games and won their 12th consecutive Thursday game. That Thursday streak is among the longest active runs in the FBS.
For UCF coach Scott Frost, the victory was the 25th of his UCF career.
The 73 points also tied the program’s single-game scoring record, matching the total UCF produced against Austin Peay in 2017.
Bethune-Cookman Finds Late Touchdown
Bethune-Cookman struggled to generate offense for most of the night, with Jefferson completing 4 of 10 passes for 55 yards. The Wildcats’ only points came on the final play of the game.
Joel Morris connected with Kobe Stewart on an eight-yard touchdown pass as time expired, preventing a shutout but doing little to change the outcome of the ucf game.
What Comes Next on the UCF Football Schedule?
After opening the campaign at home, the Knights now turn their attention to their next challenge on the UCF football schedule.
UCF will travel to Acrisure Stadium to face Pittsburgh on Saturday, September 12. The non-conference matchup is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN2.
The trip to Pittsburgh should provide a much tougher test after UCF’s overwhelming performance against Bethune-Cookman. Still, the explosive debut gives the Knights plenty of momentum heading into their next game.
For UCF, the 73-6 victory was more than just an opening-week win. It showcased the team’s depth, rushing attack and defensive play while establishing a new standard for dominance as the Knights begin their 2026 campaign.
