Amen Thompson has secured his future with the Houston Rockets after agreeing to a massive five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension. The deal also includes a 10% trade kicker, further highlighting how highly the franchise values the young guard.
Thompson, 23, was selected fourth overall by Houston in the 2023 NBA Draft. After developing into one of the Rockets’ most versatile players, he has now earned a long-term commitment that could make him a key part of the team’s next era.
Amen Thompson’s $208 Million Contract
Thompson’s new five-year extension is worth $208 million, according to reports. While he was eligible for a maximum rookie-scale extension worth as much as $251 million, he agreed to a lower figure to remain with the Rockets.
The contract includes a 10% trade kicker, giving Thompson additional financial protection if Houston eventually trades him.
The agreement also removes uncertainty surrounding Thompson’s future as the Rockets prepare for the 2026-27 NBA season.
Thompson Breaks Out in 2025-26
Thompson took a major step forward during the 2025-26 campaign.
He averaged career highs of:
- 18.3 points per game
- 7.0 rebounds per game
- 5.3 assists per game
- 1.5 steals per game
He also shot 53.4% from the field and averaged 0.6 blocks per game.
Thompson was one of only nine NBA players to average at least 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The group included established stars such as Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jayson Tatum, as well as his Houston teammate Alperen Sengun.
Thompson was also eighth in the NBA in total steals and fourth in loose-ball recoveries. His defensive impact earned him eighth-place voting in the Defensive Player of the Year race.
Versatility Makes Thompson Valuable
One of Thompson’s biggest strengths is his ability to contribute in multiple roles.
With Fred VanVleet missing significant time last season, Thompson received more opportunities to handle the ball and operate as a primary playmaker. His combination of size, athleticism and defensive ability allows him to play either guard position and, depending on the matchup, spend time in the frontcourt.
That versatility gives Rockets coach Ime Udoka greater flexibility when building lineups and adjusting during games.
Rockets Continue Building Their Young Core
The extension is another major commitment by Houston to its young foundation.
The Rockets have already secured long-term deals for players including Thompson, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason. Houston also made a major move before last season by agreeing to a two-year, $90 million extension with veteran star Kevin Durant.
The team has won 52 games in each of the past two seasons, and the front office is clearly betting that its combination of young talent and veteran experience can push the Rockets deeper into championship contention.
Amen Thompson Becomes Second 2023 Pick to Get Extension
Thompson is the second player from the 2023 NBA Draft class to agree to a rookie-scale extension, following San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama.
Other notable players from the class, including Brandon Miller, Ausar Thompson, Keyonte George, Cason Wallace, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Brandin Podziemski, are expected to have contract decisions of their own.
For Thompson, however, the uncertainty is over.
What the Extension Means for Houston
The $208 million agreement represents much more than a big payday for Thompson. It is also a statement about Houston’s confidence in its young core.
At just 23, Thompson has already demonstrated that he can score efficiently, create opportunities for teammates, defend multiple positions and impact games without dominating the ball.
With Thompson locked in alongside Sengun, Smith, Eason, Durant and VanVleet, Houston enters the 2026-27 season with a roster built around both emerging talent and experienced leadership.
If Thompson continues developing at his current pace, the Rockets could view this extension as one of the foundational moves of a potential championship-caliber team.
