Watford and West Ham United shared the points in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road on Saturday, 29 August, as the Hammers’ difficult start to the Championship season continued.
A crowd of 20,976 watched Watford take the lead through teenage forward Amin Nabizada, whose outstanding individual effort gave the Hornets a deserved advantage in the first half. West Ham responded soon afterwards when Mattie Pollock inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
Despite dominating large periods of the second half and creating several opportunities, West Ham could not find the winning goal. The result means Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are still searching for their first league victory, while Watford remain unbeaten under new head coach Alessio Dionisi.
Nabizada Gives Watford the Lead
Watford started with plenty of attacking intent and came close to opening the scoring before eventually finding the breakthrough in spectacular fashion.
After an earlier effort went narrowly wide, Nabizada made no mistake in the 19th minute. The 19-year-old Afghanistan international collected the ball following Omar Traore’s cross and produced a superb curling finish into the top-right corner.
The goal demonstrated the youngster’s confidence and technical ability, giving Watford a 1-0 lead and sending the home supporters into celebration.
West Ham initially struggled to respond, but they were handed an unexpected route back into the contest just eight minutes later.
West Ham Benefit From Watford Mistake
The equaliser arrived in unusual circumstances.
Watford defender Kevin Keben attempted to guide the ball towards his own goal line, but Taty Castellanos took advantage of the situation and managed to poke the ball back into the danger area.
Pollock was unable to prevent the ball from going into his own net, leaving Watford goalkeeper Francesco Ravaglia helpless.
The unfortunate own goal brought West Ham level at 1-1 and changed the momentum of the match.
West Ham Dominate After the Break
The visitors returned for the second half with a much greater attacking threat.
West Ham pushed Watford deeper and created a number of chances as they looked to complete a comeback. Arne Engels fired narrowly wide, while Manor Solomon also came close after finding space in the Watford penalty area.
The Hammers continued to apply pressure as the game entered its closing stages, but Watford’s defence repeatedly managed to withstand the attacks.
Pollock, after scoring the unfortunate own goal, played an important role in keeping his side level. The defender produced a crucial late intervention to prevent Solomon from converting a promising one-on-one opportunity.
Watford also had one of the final major chances of the match when Iker Bravo broke forward on the counter-attack, but Joel Veltman’s deflection sent the effort over the crossbar.
Neither side could find a decisive second goal, with the points ultimately shared.
Watford Continue Unbeaten Start
The draw represents another positive result for Dionisi, particularly after Watford suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against League One side Peterborough United in the Carabao Cup during midweek.
Despite having limited options available, Dionisi named two goalkeepers among his substitutes and was able to guide his side to five points from their opening three Championship fixtures.
Nabizada was the standout performer for Watford, with his goal earning him the highest average player rating among the two teams.
The Hornets will now turn their attention towards Tuesday’s trip to Swansea City as they attempt to maintain their unbeaten league record.
West Ham Still Searching for First League Win
For West Ham, the result will feel like another missed opportunity.
The Hammers entered the Championship season among the favourites for promotion following their relegation from the Premier League, but their opening three league matches have produced just two points.
After surrendering a two-goal advantage against Burnley and suffering a surprise home defeat to Charlton, West Ham were again unable to turn pressure into three points at Vicarage Road.
The travelling supporters expressed their frustration at full time, with sections of the away end directing chants towards manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
West Ham will have little time to recover, with another important Championship fixture against fellow relegated side Wolverhampton Wanderers scheduled for Tuesday.

Nabizada’s superb first-half goal provided the highlight of the afternoon, while Watford’s defensive resilience after the interval helped them protect their unbeaten league start.
For West Ham, however, the draw highlights a growing concern. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are creating opportunities but are still waiting for their first Championship victory.
With the season still in its early stages, the Hammers have plenty of time to recover, but their upcoming meeting with Wolves could prove important as they look to turn their promising spells of play into much-needed wins.
