The 2026 Tour Championship has arrived, bringing the PGA Tour season to its final stage with the FedEx Cup title and a $10 million first-place prize on the line at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
The season-ending tournament runs from Thursday, August 27, through Sunday, August 30, with 30 of the year’s top FedEx Cup performers competing for the championship. Among the biggest names in the field are Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, defending champion Tommy Fleetwood, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele.
Unlike the previous staggered-start system, all 30 golfers begin the 2026 Tour Championship at even par. That puts an added emphasis on four-round performance, with the player who finishes with the best 72-hole score claiming both the tournament and FedEx Cup titles.
Scottie Scheffler Headlines the 2026 Tour Championship
Scottie Scheffler enters East Lake as the No. 1 player in the FedEx Cup standings and the leading contender for the championship.
Scheffler has occupied the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings for the fifth consecutive season and is looking for his second FedEx Cup title after winning in 2024.
The world No. 1 has also had to manage an illness ahead of the tournament, but he indicated that he was feeling better and is set to compete. Scheffler was paired with Matt Fitzpatrick for Thursday’s opening round, with the final group scheduled to tee off at 2 p.m. ET.
Fitzpatrick enters the tournament at No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings, while Wyndham Clark moved into third after his victory at the BMW Championship.
Rory McIlroy Chasing Historic Fourth Title
Rory McIlroy is another major storyline at the 2026 Tour Championship.
The Northern Irish star is already the only three-time winner of the FedEx Cup and has the opportunity to become the first player to win the season-long championship four times.
McIlroy enters the tournament ranked 11th in the FedEx Cup standings and will begin alongside Xander Schauffele. Their opening-round tee time is scheduled for 12:54 p.m. ET.
McIlroy has one PGA Tour victory in 2026, but it came at one of the biggest tournaments in golf. His Masters triumph added another major championship to his impressive career record.
Defending Champion Tommy Fleetwood Returns
Tommy Fleetwood returns to East Lake as the defending Tour Championship winner and could make history with another victory.
No player has won the Tour Championship in consecutive years during the 20-year history of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Fleetwood therefore has a chance to end that streak while defending his title.
Fleetwood will open his title defense alongside Ludvig Åberg. The pair is scheduled to begin at 1:12 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Tour Championship Purse and Prize Money
The 2026 Tour Championship features a total purse of $40 million, with the winner receiving $10 million.
The prize money extends throughout the 30-player field, with the top eight finishers each earning more than $1 million. Even the player finishing 30th is scheduled to receive $355,000.
With the FedEx Cup championship also at stake, the financial and competitive rewards make East Lake one of the most important stops on the PGA Tour calendar.
Weather Could Play a Role at East Lake
Weather is another factor to watch during the opening round in Atlanta.
Thursday’s forecast calls for humid conditions, with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Rain was already affecting East Lake around the start of the first round, with umbrellas appearing around the course.
The forecast calls for a high near 87 degrees Fahrenheit and a significant chance of rain, potentially making course conditions an additional challenge for the 30-player field.

Why the 2026 Format Is Different
One of the biggest changes surrounding the 2026 Tour Championship is the starting format.
All 30 players begin at even par rather than receiving different starting scores based on their FedEx Cup positions. That means the championship will be decided entirely by performance over the 72 holes at East Lake.
The change creates a more direct tournament dynamic. Players who entered the event lower in the FedEx Cup standings have an opportunity to overcome the rankings with four strong rounds, while the leading players must prove themselves on the course rather than relying on an advantage carried into the tournament.
What to Watch at East Lake
Scheffler’s health and form will be closely followed as the world No. 1 attempts to convert his FedEx Cup position into another championship.
McIlroy’s pursuit of a record fourth FedEx Cup title adds another layer of intrigue, while Fleetwood is attempting to become the first consecutive Tour Championship winner of the FedEx Cup era.
Clark, Fitzpatrick and Gotterup also enter with strong 2026 records, each having won three times on the PGA Tour this season.
With $40 million in total prize money, a $10 million winner’s check and the FedEx Cup trophy awaiting the champion, every round at East Lake carries enormous significance.
The 2026 Tour Championship will ultimately produce one winner, and by Sunday afternoon, the PGA Tour season will have its FedEx Cup champion.
