The New York Giants have suffered a major setback before the start of the 2026 NFL season, with wide receiver Calvin Austin III ruled out for the entire campaign after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee.
Austin sustained the injury during Tuesday’s training camp practice while running a route in a one-on-one drill against Giants cornerback Deonte Banks. The 27-year-old receiver went down suddenly and immediately grabbed his right knee, bringing practice to a halt.
According to the report, an MRI confirmed the torn ACL. Austin had joined the Giants this offseason on a one-year contract after spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Calvin Austin Injury Ends 2026 Season
The injury is particularly disappointing for Austin because he was expected to play an important role in the Giants’ offense. New York signed him with the intention of using him primarily as a slot receiver, giving the team another quick and versatile target.
Austin had been competing for a significant offensive role throughout training camp. Instead, he will now face a lengthy rehabilitation process after suffering the season-ending knee injury.
During his 2025 season with the Steelers, Austin recorded 31 receptions for 372 yards and three touchdowns. Those numbers showed his potential as a complementary receiving option, and the Giants were hoping his speed could add another dimension to their passing game.
Giants Forced to Reconsider Slot Receiver Plans
Austin’s absence immediately creates a hole in the Giants’ wide receiver rotation.
Braxton Berrios stepped into the first-team slot role following Austin’s injury during practice. Berrios has extensive experience playing from the slot, making him one of the most logical candidates to take on additional responsibilities.
However, the Giants could also look at other options as they reshape the receiver group before Week 1.
One intriguing possibility is veteran Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham had primarily been working with the second-team offense and appeared to be competing for his roster spot. His performance on Tuesday could now become more significant.
Beckham reportedly had one of his strongest practices of the summer, catching four passes during live drills, including two receptions from starting quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Darnell Mooney also had a strong showing during the same practice and could become another important piece of the Giants’ receiving corps.
What Calvin Austin’s Injury Means for the Giants
Austin’s injury goes beyond losing one receiver. The Giants now have to reconsider how they distribute targets and how they create space in the passing game.
His speed and ability to operate from the slot were expected to complement the team’s other offensive weapons. Without him, New York may need to rely more heavily on Berrios and potentially increase the workload of other receivers.
The coaching staff will also have to determine whether the current roster has enough depth or whether the Giants should explore additional options before the regular season begins.
The timing makes the situation even more challenging because the injury occurred late in training camp, leaving the team limited time to make adjustments.
Giants Teammates Rally Around Austin
The injury created an emotional scene at Giants practice.
After Austin went down, trainers quickly brought out a cart. His teammates gathered around him before he was taken from the field.
The quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs later formed a circle and held a lengthy prayer for Austin. Giants owner John Mara also went to the side field to console the injured receiver.
The response highlighted how significant Austin had become within the team despite joining the Giants only this offseason.
Who Could Replace Calvin Austin?
Berrios currently appears to be one of the clearest candidates to take over Austin’s slot responsibilities.
His experience in that role could make the transition easier for the Giants, particularly with the regular season approaching. Still, the team has several other receivers who could see their opportunities increase.
Beckham could receive more snaps if he remains on the roster, while Mooney could also take on a larger role within the offense.
The Giants could ultimately use a committee approach rather than asking one player to completely replace Austin.
A Difficult Setback for Calvin Austin
For Austin, the injury represents a particularly difficult moment. He had just changed teams and was preparing for an important opportunity with the Giants after four seasons in Pittsburgh.
The one-year contract gave him a chance to establish himself in a new offense and potentially earn a larger role. Instead, his 2026 season has ended before he can play a regular-season snap for New York.
His focus will now shift toward recovery and rehabilitation with the goal of returning to the field.
Giants Face Important Decisions Before Week 1
The Giants entered training camp hoping to build continuity on offense, but Austin’s ACL injury changes those plans.
New York will now need to evaluate its receiver depth, determine the best replacement for Austin in the slot and potentially consider roster moves before the season begins.
The injury also places greater importance on the development of quarterback Jaxson Dart and his chemistry with the remaining receivers. With Austin no longer available, the Giants will need other offensive players to step forward.
For now, the Giants must move forward without one of their expected contributors. Calvin Austin’s season-ending ACL injury is a major blow, but the team has several weeks to adjust its offensive plans before the 2026 regular season gets underway.
