Aston Villa’s miserable afternoon became even worse in the 40th minute when João Gomes was dismissed.
The Villa midfielder had already been booked and was subsequently shown a straight red after a VAR review for kicking out at Rutter following a challenge.
Gomes endured a nightmare Premier League debut, while Villa were forced to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
The combination of four conceded goals and a red card left Unai Emery’s team facing an almost impossible task after just 45 minutes.
Aston Villa Struggle After a Difficult Summer
The heavy defeat comes during a turbulent period for Aston Villa.
