The Las Vegas Raiders rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat the Houston Texans 22-20 in a dramatic preseason matchup on Thursday, August 20. While the final result belonged to Las Vegas, the game also provided an important evaluation of rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
The Raiders selected Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Thursday’s contest represented another significant step in his development. Las Vegas gave the rookie the entire first half to operate against Houston, giving the coaching staff an extended look at him in game conditions.
Mendoza showed both encouraging flashes and areas that still require improvement.

Raiders Still Have Work to Do With Mendoza
The preseason game also highlighted Mendoza’s ongoing adjustment to the NFL.
During his college career, Mendoza was accustomed to operating primarily from the shotgun. The Raiders, however, have emphasized getting him comfortable taking snaps from under center.
Las Vegas has continued giving him opportunities to work under center during practices and preseason games. Following his interception against Houston, though, the Raiders returned him to the shotgun.
That suggests the transition remains a work in progress.
Getting comfortable under center, developing timing with his offensive teammates and learning when to throw the ball away will be important parts of Mendoza’s development.
The Raiders are unlikely to expose their rookie to the same circumstances during the regular season that he faced against Houston, particularly playing behind an entirely reserve offensive line.
Aidan O’Connell Provides the Winning Spark
While Mendoza received much of the attention, O’Connell ultimately delivered the play that decided the game.
The Raiders’ backup quarterback completed 15 of 24 passes for 166 yards and helped lead the comeback after Las Vegas fell behind 20-3.
His late scoring drive demonstrated the importance of quarterback depth, particularly during the preseason when teams are evaluating players fighting for roster spots.
O’Connell’s performance also added another layer to Las Vegas’ quarterback situation as the team prepares for the regular season.
The Raiders have already indicated that veteran Kirk Cousins is expected to start, while Mendoza remains a promising long-term option. Thursday’s game reinforced why the organization can afford to give its first-round pick additional time to develop rather than rushing him into the starting role.
Texans Showed Promise Before Collapse
The loss was frustrating for Houston because the Texans controlled most of the contest.
Houston’s quarterbacks were generally efficient throughout the game. C.J. Stroud completed four of six passes in his first preseason appearance, while Davis Mills completed 11 of 15 attempts for 93 yards. Brett Rypien added six completions on 10 attempts for 60 yards.
The Texans’ defense also performed well for much of the night, particularly during the opening half.
However, Houston could not maintain its advantage after halftime. The Raiders’ offense gradually found opportunities, and the Texans ultimately surrendered 19 unanswered points after taking a 20-3 lead.
For Houston, the game served as another opportunity to evaluate its depth before the regular season begins.
What the Raiders Learned Against Houston
The biggest takeaway for Las Vegas was not simply the comeback victory. The game gave the coaching staff another indication of where Mendoza needs to improve.
The rookie needs to become more comfortable operating under center, improve his decision-making when pressure arrives and eliminate avoidable turnovers.
At the same time, Mendoza’s response to adversity remains encouraging.
The Raiders have continued to shuffle players and combinations during training camp and preseason, making it difficult for the rookie to establish consistent timing with his offensive line and pass catchers.
With the regular season approaching, Las Vegas will need to begin settling those combinations.

The 22-20 Raiders victory over the Texans ultimately became a memorable preseason comeback, but the bigger story may be the development of Fernando Mendoza.
Mendoza endured a difficult first half, including a costly interception, but the rookie continued competing and showed the resilience that has been visible throughout his transition to the NFL.
