Barcelona completed their preseason preparations with a 2-1 victory over Al Ahly in the 2026 Joan Gamper Trophy at Camp Nou on Wednesday. Goals from Hamza Abdelkarim and Raphinha gave Hansi Flick’s side a two-goal advantage before Zizo pulled one back for the Egyptian club.
Anthony Gordon had a chance to add another goal late in the game, but his penalty was saved by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
Barcelona vs Al Ahly: Hamza Abdelkarim Opens the Scoring
Barcelona started positively and controlled much of the first half, although they were not always able to turn their possession into clear opportunities.
Teenage striker Hamza Abdelkarim once again showed why he is attracting attention ahead of the new season. The young forward scored against his former club after combining with Raphinha and Alejandro Balde.
The goal was Abdelkarim’s fourth of preseason and strengthened his case for more first-team opportunities under Flick.
The Barcelona coach was impressed by the youngster’s movement, ability to attack crosses and hold-up play. With the club still looking to strengthen the No. 9 position, Abdelkarim’s preseason performances could give Flick another option in attack.
Raphinha Doubles Barcelona’s Lead
Raphinha became increasingly influential as the first half progressed. The Brazilian winger won a penalty after getting ahead of Hady Reyad, and he confidently converted from the spot.
That goal sent Barcelona into halftime with a 2-0 lead and appeared to put the Joan Gamper Trophy firmly in their control.
Barcelona’s midfield also produced a strong performance, with Marc Bernal, Xavi Espart and Fermín López providing control and energy. Bernal was particularly impressive while operating as the deepest midfielder.
Al Ahly Fight Back Through Zizo
Flick made several changes after halftime, bringing more youngsters and substitutes into the match. Barcelona’s rhythm dropped slightly as a result.
Al Ahly took advantage and reduced the deficit early in the second half. Zizo finished a counterattack after Barcelona were caught out defensively, giving the visitors renewed hope of completing a comeback.
Barcelona continued to dominate possession but found it difficult to create a decisive third goal. Substitute Karim Adeyemi provided direct running and attacking intensity, while Gavi and Pedri also made their first preseason appearances.
Anthony Gordon Misses Late Penalty
Anthony Gordon had several opportunities after moving into a false-nine role. He had one goal ruled out for offside and also forced a save from El Shenawy.
Barcelona appeared likely to regain their two-goal advantage when Gordon won a late penalty. However, the England international could not convert, with El Shenawy making an important save.
Despite the missed penalty, Barcelona held on to secure a 2-1 victory and finish preseason with the Joan Gamper Trophy.
Rodri Receives Huge Camp Nou Welcome
One of the biggest moments before kickoff involved new signing Rodri. The Spanish midfielder joined Barcelona from Manchester City during the summer and received a huge reception from supporters at Camp Nou.
Rodri did not feature in the match, but his arrival has added significant quality and experience to Flick’s midfield.
Barcelona also welcomed other summer additions, while João Cancelo was unable to take part in the squad presentation because his move from Al Hilal had not yet been officially completed.
What Barcelona’s Win Means
The 2-1 victory gives Barcelona a positive finish to their preseason as they prepare to begin their LaLiga title defense.
Flick will be encouraged by the performances of several young players, particularly Abdelkarim, while established stars such as Raphinha continue to provide important contributions.
However, the match also highlighted areas Barcelona may still need to improve. The team struggled to create chances at times and conceded a goal after losing defensive organization in the second half.
Barcelona are also continuing to look for another striker, with the club reportedly keeping the door open for further squad additions.
Barcelona’s Next Match
Barcelona now turn their attention to competitive football. Their LaLiga campaign begins with a trip to Elche on Sunday.
The Joan Gamper Trophy victory over Al Ahly represents the final step in Barcelona’s preseason preparations. With Rodri arriving, young players pushing for opportunities and several established stars returning to full fitness, expectations will be high heading into the new campaign.
