Rory McIlroy’s bid for a record fourth FedEx Cup title has suffered an early setback after the Northern Irishman endured a difficult opening event of the 2026 FedEx Cup Playoffs.
McIlroy finished 66th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind, carding a four-round total of eight over par. His disappointing performance came as Scottie Scheffler produced a dominant display to win the tournament by eight strokes.
The result leaves McIlroy with plenty of work to do ahead of the BMW Championship, where the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings will compete for a place in the season-ending Tour Championship.

McIlroy entered the FedEx Cup Playoffs in a strong position, sitting around 12th in the season-long standings. However, his opening playoff tournament did not go according to plan.
McIlroy recorded rounds of 74, 70, 72 and 72 to finish at eight over par. He was 25 strokes behind Scheffler and finished ahead of only two players in the 68-man field.
The result was particularly surprising given McIlroy’s success earlier in the season. He captured his second consecutive Masters title at Augusta National and was aiming to build on that achievement during the final stretch of the PGA Tour season.
Instead, a lack of competitive preparation appeared to affect his rhythm.
McIlroy had not played competitively since the Open Championship in July, and he acknowledged afterward that his game was far from where he wanted it to be.
McIlroy Admits He Felt Lost With His Swing
Speaking after the tournament, McIlroy admitted that he struggled to find consistency throughout the week.
He explained that he had not arrived with many recent competitive rounds and felt increasingly uncertain about his golf swing as the tournament progressed.
The biggest concern was not simply his final score but the lack of quality in his overall ball-striking. McIlroy ranked 62nd out of 68 players in strokes gained from tee to green, highlighting the scale of his struggles.
There were brief signs of improvement during his final round. A run of four birdies across seven holes offered some encouragement, but consecutive bogeys near the end of the round prevented him from finishing on a positive note.
McIlroy now has only a few days to make adjustments before the next FedEx Cup Playoffs event.
BMW Championship Becomes Crucial
The BMW Championship will be the next major test for McIlroy.
The tournament is scheduled to take place at Bellerive Country Club from August 20-23. Only the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings advance to the BMW Championship, while the field will then be reduced to the top 30 for the Tour Championship.
McIlroy’s position in the season-long standings means he remains in contention for the FedEx Cup, but his poor finish at TPC Southwind could make the next tournament especially important.
The BMW Championship will give him an opportunity to regain momentum and strengthen his position before the final event of the season.
McIlroy Still Has a Chance to Make History
Despite the disappointing start, McIlroy’s FedEx Cup hopes are far from over.
He is seeking a record-extending fourth FedEx Cup title, having already established himself as one of the most successful players in the competition’s history.
The Tour Championship format has also changed. The event now begins with all players at even par, with the previous starting-strokes system removed. McIlroy’s immediate priority is therefore to reach the final 30 and arrive at East Lake with his game in better shape.
The 2026 Tour Championship is scheduled for August 27-30, with a $40 million prize fund. The FedEx Cup champion will receive $10 million and a five-year PGA Tour exemption.
Scottie Scheffler Sets the Standard
While McIlroy struggled, Scottie Scheffler delivered one of the most impressive performances of the playoff opener.
Scheffler finished at 17 under par and won the St. Jude Championship by eight shots. His four-under 66 in the final round completed a commanding victory and marked his first win since January.
The world number one controlled the tournament from the start and never allowed his challengers to seriously threaten his lead.
His victory also underlined the level McIlroy will need to reach if he is to challenge for another FedEx Cup title.
What McIlroy Needs to Improve
McIlroy’s comments suggest that execution will be the main focus before the BMW Championship.
His performance at TPC Southwind showed problems with consistency from tee to green, while his lack of recent competitive rounds may have contributed to the rust in his game.
The short turnaround gives McIlroy little time to make major changes. Instead, he will need to regain confidence, sharpen his ball-striking and establish a more reliable swing before arriving at Bellerive.
