Busch, who drives the No. 8 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, was heard over team radio asking crew members to locate Dr. William Heisel before the race concluded. According to reports, Busch specifically requested the doctor meet him at the team bus because he was “going to need a shot.”
The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion had reportedly been dealing with a sinus cold throughout the week leading into the race weekend. During the FS1 broadcast, commentators noted that Busch had not been feeling well before the green flag even dropped at Watkins Glen.
Despite battling illness, Busch still managed one of his strongest performances of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season. After starting 21st on the grid, he worked his way through the field and finished eighth, earning his second top-10 result of the year.
The race itself was dominated by Shane van Gisbergen, who delivered another road-course masterclass by winning at Watkins Glen for the second consecutive year. Van Gisbergen led most of the event and continued his impressive streak on NASCAR road circuits.
