Born and raised in Alaska, she burst onto the international competitive swimming scene in 2020 and 2021 with personal best times in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events that put her in the rankings with former Olympic gold medalists and world record holders in the events. She was the first swimmer from Alaska to qualify for an Olympic Games, qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 100 meter breaststroke when she was 17 years old.

Alaskan teen Lydia Jacoby pulled off a shocking upset in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke, becoming the first American woman to win gold in swimming in these Olympics. She beat U.S. teammate Lilly King, who was chasing her second consecutive Olympic gold in the 100 breaststroke.
Jacoby, 17, won in 1:04.95 followed by Tatjana Schoenmaker from South Africa, who was .27 of a second back. King took bronze, the third Olympic medal of her career, finishing .59 of a second behind Jacoby.
Parents
She is the first Olympic swimmer and only the 10th Summer Olympian to be born in Alaska. She broke numerous high school state records, and her parents, Richard and Leslie Jacoby, told USA TODAY this week that their daughter took to the water “right off the bat.”

Ray Looze is the coach of Lydia, he says that “The greater the stakes, the more the pressure, the happier she is,”. But Jacoby, the daughter of boat captains who take tourists on whale watching tours, has her own impervious nature (perhaps oblivious is more accurate). Stage fright doesn’t seem to exist for her.
