The opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season turned into heartbreak for Australian driver Oscar Piastri after a dramatic crash forced him out of the Australian Grand Prix before the race had even started.
Piastri, driving for McLaren Formula 1 Team, was expected to challenge for a strong finish in front of his home crowd at Albert Park in Melbourne. However, a pre-race incident meant the young star never even reached the starting grid.
What Happened to Oscar Piastri?
The incident occurred during the reconnaissance (formation) lap, which drivers use to drive from the pit lane to the starting grid before the race begins.
While exiting Turn 4, Piastri lost control of his McLaren car. The car snapped sideways and slid into the barriers, causing significant damage to the front-right section of the vehicle.

Because of the extent of the damage, the team could not repair the car in time, meaning Piastri was forced to withdraw from the race.
Why Is Oscar Piastri Out of the Australian GP?
Piastri was officially ruled out of the race before the start because the crash happened around 30–40 minutes before lights out.
With heavy damage to the car’s front-right corner, it was impossible for the McLaren mechanics to rebuild it in such a short time. As a result, the team had to retire the car and the Australian driver did not take the start.
This meant McLaren entered the race with only one driver remaining on the grid.

Fortunately, the 24-year-old driver was not injured in the crash.
After hitting the barrier, he exited the car and walked back to the pit lane safely.
Although physically unharmed, the incident was a major disappointment for Piastri and the thousands of Australian fans who had hoped to see him compete in his home race.
