The Philadelphia 76ers (colloquially known as the Sixers) are an American professional basketball team based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The 76ers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division and play at the Wells Fargo Center. Founded in 1946 and originally known as the Syracuse Nationals, they are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA and one of only eight (out of 23) to survive the league’s first decade.

Hopefully, one night soon, we’ll stop writing about the “shorthanded sixers [insert opponent] they can handle”.

Unfortunately, Tuesday night won’t be that night.

The shorthanded Sixers gave the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks all they could handle, but fell 118-109 at the Wells Fargo center. The Sixers are now 8-4.

The Sixers were down to six players (seven if you include two-way player Grant Riller), with Seth Curry (left leg injury) missing in the game. Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris, Matisse Thiboul, and Isaiah Joe remain in the league’s health and safety protocols. Doc Rivers said pregame that Harris is feeling much better and that he hopes to move on sooner rather than later. Ben Simmons (personal reasons) stayed out.

The Sixers will host the Toronto Raptors on Thursday before embarking on a six-game road trip.

Here are some takeaways from the game.

After finishing a perfect week leading 4-0, the Philadelphia 76ers began the new week with a tough matchup against the always-physical New York Knicks. Going into Monday’s game, the Sixers knew they would be without Tobias Harris, Isaiah Joe and Mattis Thiebull as they remained within the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

Although the Sixers withdrew into the lineup after missing Danny Green for a few games, the team was hoping to rest Joel Embiid in Monday’s matchup. While his absence was no surprise, the Sixers were shocked to learn that Embiid would become the fourth 76er to enter health and safety protocols on Monday night.

Without many key players last week, the Sixers found ways to win the game. However, the six-match winning streak was broken by the Knicks on Monday. The Sixers made a decent effort during the underman, but they lacked the equipment and energy to get out in front of the Knicks and take the win. As a team, the Sixers had a respectable effort. Now, let’s look at the individual demonstrations.

Vaccine

It hurts differently for 76ers.

It’s not a knock against Tobias Harris, Mattis Thiebull and Isaiah Joe, who are in the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols. But the weight of the Sixers rests on Joel Embiid’s shoulders.

The four-time All-Star has to play at an elite level, stay healthy, and fight for his first NBA title since 1983 for the Sixers. Embiid, who has been vaccinated, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday and was joined by three of his teammates and a staff member in the protocol.

A vaccinated player can usually return after a 10-day quarantine or after two negative tests in a span of 24 hours. Embiid is symptomatic. This suggests that he can stay outside for more than 10 days.

Schedule

The NBA released its 2021-2022 regular season schedule on Friday. We’ve taken a look at the Philadelphia 76ers’ major games and notable odds with the draft, mostly behind us.

What difference does a season make? After finishing sixth in 2019-20 and being swept in the first round by the Celtics, the Sixers made some major improvements by bringing in Doc Rivers as their head coach, signing Seth Curry, Danny Green and Dwight Howard. The following season, they finished at the top of the Eastern Conference with a 49–23 record, ready to race a deep run to the playoffs. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the conference semifinals after the Hawks defeated them in seven.

Looking to regroup and perform even better next season, Joel Embiid would lead the charge as the Sixers offered him a contract extension reportedly worth $196 million over four years. While he re-signed Furkan Korkamaz to a multi-year deal, he also picked up some new pieces to help edge both sides of the court as he picked up veteran forward Georges Niang from the Utah Jazz and center Andre Drummond from the Lakers. got caught. Pick Jaden Springer and undrafted free agent Aaron Henry, along with a few other minor pieces in the draft, will look to score a deep playoff run in 2021-22.
