Raheem Mostart left Sunday’s action early with a knee injury, which in turn left the 49ers without their top for the rest of the game. Although Elijah Mitchell and Jamie Michael Hesty played well, this team will completely miss the presence of their top running backs for any extended period.

Dre Greenlaw also left Sunday’s action with an apparent groin injury after capping the first half with a lofty six.

DETROIT — One of the big pieces missing for the 49ers’ offense last season was Raheem Mostart, running back, who followed up his breakout 2019 season with an injury-prone 2020.

So it was disappointing in the first half when reports came that Mostart – who scored 11 and 9 yards on the first drive of the 49ers – had been sidelined with a knee injury. Running is so important to Kyle Shanahan’s offensive work, it seemed like a huge blow.

But it also seems that every part put into Shanahan’s guilt is fruitful. And that old “next man up” trope in the game means that suddenly there was a huge opportunity for another player.

It was not what you would have predicted.

Rookie Eliza Mitchell, a sixth-round draft pick from Louisiana, was approved as a backup. The third-round pick out tray precept from Ohio State was inactive. Shanahan said that the decision to accompany Michelle was made at the training camp. Mitchell said he learned he would be backup a few days before the game.

Inactives

With Jalen Hurd on injured reserve and Deontay Johnson rising above the practice squad on Saturday, the 49ers needed five inactive with their active roster set at just 52 players. Remember, they’re carrying three quarterbacks.

It’s too early to expect Norman to be ready to play in an NFL game. He only had a few drills under his belt, and there’s no way of knowing if Norman’s “game ready” or in game shape.

That means we’ll likely see Demodor Lenore start, unless the team has confidence in him and they start Deontay Johnson.

The sermon is a surprising scratch. JaMycal Hasty and Elijah Mitchell should have an extended look at Passing Down. I’m thrilled to see how the team spins back on the run.

After the Lions’ field goal, the 49ers made seven plays for 75 yards in less than four minutes. Garoppolo once again connected with Dibo on a chunk play from 23 yards. JaMycal Hasty punched it from three yards and gave the 49ers a 21-10 lead.

The Lions managed to turn the ball early and closed a drive with a touchdown pass. Although the 49ers pressured Detroit to score, I doubted the Lions’ ability to keep pace with San Francisco. This will prove to be wrong.

The Lions took advantage of having a timeout and were on the 25-yard line with 32 seconds to play. It came down to 4th & 9 from the 24-yard line, and pressure from Samson Ebukam forced an errant throw.

Man. What a game. The rollercoaster of emotions you go through when you watch this team is unlike anything else. This was was game one.

41-33, good guys.

Some defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: 49ers were fourth in rushing touchdowns, leaving the 2020 season with only 12. Of course, the good news for Detroit is that these forces working against them may not carry over into the new season.

Chances are on San Francisco’s side, so they will need to be decently wary. Winning is hardly a sure thing, especially at the start of the season, so expect a good game

In the middle of the fourth quarter, 49ers quarterback Jason Verrett went down with a non-contact injury and immediately reached for his right knee.

He went off the field under his own power after the trainers took care of him. At last Verett went to the bench and then walked towards the locker room, shedding tears. He stopped several times and needed help walking.

This is a potentially brutal injury for Verett and the 49ers. Deontay Johnson was the first corner off the bench.
