The 2026 FIFA World Cup (Spanish: Copa Mundial de la FIFA de 2026; French: Coupe du Monde de la FIFA de 2026) will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men’s association football championship contested by the national teams of the member confederations of FIFA. The tournament will be jointly hosted by 16 cities in three North American countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States. The 60 matches, including the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, will be hosted by the United States while neighboring Canada and Mexico will host 10 matches each. The tournament will be the first to be hosted by the three countries. The tournament will be the first to include 48 teams, expanded from 32.

The 2026 World Cup will be the third time that Mexico has hosted the event, making it the first country to do so. It was previously the host of the 1970 and 1986 World Cups. The United States will host it for the second time (1994 and 2026).

FIFA on Thursday began unveiling its plans for the three-nation men’s World Cup in 2026 by announcing the host cities for football’s biggest championship. The tournament, jointly organized by the United States, Mexico and Canada, will be the first with 48 teams, up from the current 32, and will take place in cities across North America.

“This part of the world has no idea what will happen here in 2026,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino told a news conference in Manhattan after the televised announcement.

The choices for 16 cities selected from a list of 22 finalists were revealed in blocks representing the three regional groups, East, Central and West regions.
