Sam Burns took the field at the 2022 Valspar Championships on Sunday after saving equals. He then knocked Davis Riley down with a birdie from the deep in a playoff that would go down as one of the best puts of the year.

The win for Burns was his second consecutive win at this tournament and was a thrilling finale as the PGA Tour all season.

Burns was flawless for 16 holes. He made several equal puts between 9–12 feet to maintain his pace downhill and birdied all the holes he was about to bird, playing with Justin Thomas in the second-to-last group, in front of Matthew Nesmith and Riley. Were. On the 17th, he made a mistake when he left his bunker shot short of the green and blew his chip 9 feet ahead of the hole. But then, another one in that 9-12 foot range — this time to save the bogey — kept the trophy alive for Burns.

Grades

Davis Riley made three birdies from hard spots to close the front nine and then kept right on rolling on Saturday until he had a 9-under 62, a tournament scoring record and a two-shot lead in the Valspar Championship .

And just like that, a Masters invitation has been in mind for the 25-year-old PGA Tour rookie relay.

He played in front of the biggest gallery in steamy Innisbrook, most of them there to see the other Alabama alum in pair. Justin Thomas played his part with a third consecutive 66, setting a tournament record that could have been achieved in any other year.

Riley stole the show from the ruff and under a tree with a creative chip-and-run, and with a 70-foot bunker shot that stuck in the cup at No. They were two birdies out of nine. On the Copperhead course—he only had 20 puts for the round—that helped him convert a five-shot deficit into a two-shot lead.

Wins

Burns hit a birdie putt hole from just over 30 feet on the 16th hole to defeat Davis Riley on the second playoff hole, giving him three PGA Tour victories in his final 22. Burns, who closed with 2-under 69, is the second consecutive back-to-back winner at Innisbruck after Paul Casey’s consecutive wins in 2018 and 2019. The tournament was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The win takes Burns to No. 2 in the FexExCup and No. 10 for the first time in the world, knocking Dustin Johnson out of the top 10 for the first time in seven years. “Man, this is crazy,” Burns said. “Davis played well today, especially the way he finished. I tried to stay still. I didn’t make many mistakes. Lots of time on Sundays if you work your way up, make a bunch of pars, throw some birdies, so many times it works out well. very happy.” Burns won last year by three shots
