The 2022 Indianapolis 500 (branded as the 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge for sponsorship reasons) is a 500-mile (800 km, 200 lap) race in the 2022 IndyCar Series, scheduled for Sunday, May 29, 2022, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. The month of May activities will formally begin on May 14 with the GMR Grand Prix on the combined road course.

500 Prize Money Breakdown:

The 2020 purse was poised to be the largest in history, said Roger Penske, who bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2019. After the decision was made to halt fan attendance for the 2020 race, the purse was cut in half from around $15 million to $7.5 million because there would be no ticket sales. 

She set a record for drivers who are women with nine Indy 500 starts between 2000-10, and will pace the field ahead of the 2022 Indy 500 on May 29.

“Every day here is special. I’ve been able to be here since 2000,” Fisher said from the Yard of Bricks.

Before 1982, the winner’s check was always more than 20%, and it was often more than 30% in the 1950s and 60s. But since the first race in 1911, the race winner has tended to receive less and less money on a percentage basis.

In 1911, Ray Harroun’s $20,000 prize was a record 45% of the total purse. Last year, Sato took home just 18.3% of the purse. That was down from the 20.4% Simon Pagenaud received in 2019.

“You all have opened me with open arms. Each year I’ve been here has been special. When (Boles) called, that was no different. Being the celebrity pace car driver, the driver that will be in the whole time, is just another special memory I’ll be able to have here.”
